Okay, lets get straight down to it, what horror remakes do you think were better, or at the very least equal to the original ?

Don't worry you won't be burned at the stake for your opinions!!

Here are some remakes that I thought were better, or even decent:

Let the Right One In (2008) (8) V Let Me In (2010) (8) - The English language remake was superb in my opinion. Captured the atmosphere of the original perfectly.

The Woman in Black (1989) (8) V The Woman in Black (2012) (8) - The remake delivers! Both creepy films.

Pet Sematary (1989) (8) V Pet Sematary (2019) (8) - One of the most controversial entries on my list! This is a solid of the original movie, it seeps and drips with gritty bleakness.

The Thing from Another World (1951) (8) V The Thing (1982) (8) - Obvious entry, both brilliant!

Night of the Living Dead (1968) (8) V Night of the Living Dead (1990) (7) - The original is king, but the remake is very decent.

The Fly (1958) (8) V The Fly (1986) (8) - Another obvious choice, both classics, remake shades it for the gore!

Ringu (1998) (8) V The Ring (2002) (7) - The original is superb. The remake was good too. The remake has a 7.1 rating on IMDb after all.

Fright Night (1985) (7) V Fright Night (2011) (7) - Both very entertaining, the remake was much better than expected.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956) (5) V Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) (7) - The remake here is superior. The original never did it for me, oddly enough.

REC (2007) (8) V Quarantine (2008) (7) - Quarantine not quite as strong as the original, but still very good.

The Blob (1958) (6) V The Blob (1988) (7) - Gore prevails!

Maniac (1980) (6) V Maniac (2012) (7) - A Remake that exceeds the original in every way.

Suspiria (1977) (9) V Suspiria (2018) (7) - Not as good as the original but very good.

The Evil Dead (1981) (9) V Evil Dead (2013) (6.5) - No where near as good as the original but I liked its own take of the story.

What remakes did you think were as good or better than the original ?

I think I Spit on Your Grave (2010) might be the coolest. Mother's Day (2010) is also a pretty great home invasion movie but very different from the original. I also think The Blob (1988) has great effects and is much more entertaining than the 50s version.

While I wouldn't say it's better than the original, I very much love the Texas Chainsaw Massacre from 2003. I was early in my horror infatuation when I first saw this and it fucked me up. It's considered rather tame to most hardcore horror fans, but it has a great dreary mood and R Lee Ermey is fucking fantastic.

I Spit is a weird franchise. The first is charming on account of its low-budget dirty crime vibe, but the remake really amps up the threat. The original is actually pretty tame, especially when compared to the remake, which is less cheesy and more squeamishly gross. It's an exceptional version.

Somehow, the sequels to the remake are good too. They follow a slightly alternative formula, but the concept is the same. Part 2 is one old story and part 3 is a mixed bag on account of its overuse of dream sequences to pad out a chunk of the movie. Deja Vu, the recent direct sequel to the original sucked ass though, so in this case, I'd say the remake series is still better than the original canon.
