Troma movies

May 2019
I would guess that the majority of people here are fans of the Troma movies... And I would like to think that I am open-minded when it comes to horror..

I have seen around six of these movies to date recently - having not seen a single one in my life.. and I have to admit, and I don't want to offend anyone here - but they really are not very good, in my opinion.. they can be childishly silly and immature..

I know they completely conflict with my tastes, but is there anyone here who is not a fan of these movies?

The Toxic Avenger (1984)
Class of Nuke 'Em High (1986)
Redneck Zombies (1989)
Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead (2006)
Terror Firmer (1999)
Tromeo and Juliet (1996)

I thought I would have liked a few of them better. They just seem to me to have terrible dialogue and puerile humour. Maybe, that is just me thou

Okay, those are all good ones. You just have to have the right sense of humor to get them. Toxic Avenger, Tromeo & Juliet, and Terror Firmer are the three best in house Troma movies to me. If you don't like those, you won't like the others. They have distributed a lot of movies that they did not make, and some of those are considerably more serious. I wouldn't write them off completely.

Yeah, I guess there is no hope for me with the rest, at least, I tried thou. I'd prefer the more serious, distributed movies like Combat Shock - I really enjoyed that one.

Many of them do suck. The early sex comedies, Troma's War, Surf Nazis Must Die, Sgt Kabukiman, Toxic Avenger 2 and 3.

I think The Toxic Avenger, which I LOVE, was a fluke because the only in-house Troma movies that were worth a damn didn't come until like a decade later when Troma had a revival with Tromeo and Juliet, and then Terror Firmer.

The movies they picked up are, generally speaking, much, much better. Seen Combat Shock? That's an amazing movie, on par with the Toxic Avenger, for me, but tonally much different. Rabid Grannies is another pretty good one, and actually more serious and creepy than the title would lead on.

Yeah, Combat Shock is very good. It was distributed by Troma, I believe. I didn't know that until today. I might try Rabid Grannies, that seems to be a bit different to the rest, thanks.

I also saw Surf Nazis but had forgotten it was a Troma movie. I remember it being fairly boring. Bobbie Bresee was in it but had very little screen time and did not ever get naked so that isn't even a viable reason to watch it.

While not a big fan, I must say Troma films definitely deserves to be at home here at Trash Epics. Most of their films were made for the shocks at the time. Looking through their catalog the only film of theirs that I purchased on DVD/BR is The Stendhal Syndrome and I didn't even realize that Troma produced it! I liked Terror Firmer and some of their 80's releases like Toxic Avenger, The Children, Mothers Day and Rabid Grannies for nostalgic reasons but not enough to buy them for repeat watches. While I don't hate Troma, I'm definitely not a big fan.

They produced The Stendhal Syndrome, wow! I thought the only distributed it. The picked up some good odd movies in comparison to what they made, Combat Shock too.

You might be right on the distribution part. I just googled Troma Films and the list of films said produced by Troma. I wouldn't put it past Google to muck something like this up.

Troma films are very hit or miss. The ones you've listed are mostly the Lloyd Kaufman movies, which are very zany, but not all Troma movies are that way. Most of them do have a sense of humor about them, and are at least somewhat aware of how shitty they are.

List of most seen Troma titles on TE:

As Vinnie said, these movies are mostly shit, but they're absolute TE material.

I wouldn't consider myself a fan, not a big fan anyway. Some of their stuff is okay, but I've never liked anything enough to buy it. I'm not very familiar with the movies they only distributed, though I didn't know they had any connection to The Stendhal Syndrome. It's possible I've seen more than I realize.

I saw Toxic Avenger and Class of Nuke'em High many years ago and didn't like either one. I don't remember much now except I didn't find them funny or entertaining at all.
