So someone asked me post my thoughts about this movie. It's one I picked up in a Goodwill haul.
Overall, it was pretty good. (6/10)
As a psychological thriller, it worked really well. The basic plot is a fairly common one among horror/thrillers: a family/group move into a house that belonged to another family, and one of the family members goes coocoo for Coco-Puffs.
The Wendigo itself was really more of an afterthought. And I don't think it really existed. It was just an old story that came up and messed with Otis's mind over his guilt for shooting George.
So basically, if you're looking for a horror movie, that's not what you will find.
But as I said, if looking for a psychological thriller, this would be a good watch.

I never did get to see this one. Jake Weber was in it and Medium was a hit show around the time I first heard about it. I remember asking about it on the old board a long time ago and if I remember correctly some liked it and some didn't. I thought it sounded interesting but then it was suddenly out of print and being called rare and DVDs were selling for big prices on eBay. When I first heard about it, it was being sold cheap at places like Oldies.com. I always hoped I'd find it at some thrift store, but so far I haven't. Now I haven't thought about it for a long time. I don't imagine a blu-ray release is coming any time soon.

I have seen this!! I probably even own it on DVD, actually... I have been a pretty big Larry Fessenden fan, off and on, over the years.

Anyway, yeah, I like it. The situation with the family taking over the cabin that that hunter grew up in was so frigging wretched. I know the hunter guy was supposed to be crazy, but I still felt bad for him. Now that I'm thinking about this, the whole situation with the cabin kind of reminds me of that Jennifer Connolly movie, The House of Sand and Fog...

That is interesting, you don't think the Wendigo existed at all? I'm gonna have to think about that. The kid (from Malcolm in the Middle, I think) had some kind of problem, didn't he?? Could he have been imagining the Wendigo? Yeah, OK....my first impulse is to disagree with you about that, but very cautiously, because that does sound like an interesting theory.

I like Patricia Clarkson, from The Green Mile. She just seems cool to me. I remember Steven Weber from the 2004 Dawn of the Dead, of course.... he has a great voice. He was a pretty sympathetic character, as I recall. His problem might have been in expecting warmth, rationality, and humanity from the universe at large, when the universe often just does not give a crap about any of us.

I have not seen this in a while, so, sorry if what I'm saying doesn't make as much sense as I hope it does. Anyway.... yeah! Great movie!

Been a long time but from what I remember it's worthy. Always been a fan of Larry Fessenden whether directing or acting...love him in I Sell the Dead, quality horror comedy of the 2000-10 period IMO.

The Indian who gave him the totem told him about the Wendigo, so he would have knowledge of it from there. He was also looking through a book that had Indian folklore in it, so that could have reinforced what the kid was seeing.
