The Tenant (1976)

Any fans? What a strange movie. I think I liked it more this time around than my initial watch which was over 10 years ago. It's definitely a slow-burn with little payoff, unfortunately, but it does have a fairly charming quality to it.

Firstly, Roman Polanski's acting is something else. He's on par with Tommy Wiseau at times. Despite little of note happening, his acting "skills" and his heavy accent make it oddly watchable. Secondly, while its first and foremost a thriller, I think it's got a heavy dose of black comedy to it too. Not sure if it's intentional but scenes of Polanski becoming a cross-dresser are hard to take seriously.

Not as good as Rosemary's Baby, of course, but a neat end to Polanski's so-called "Apartment Trilogy" (with Repulsion being the first.)

I think this is a great movie. I'd rank them:

Rosemary's Baby > The Tenant > Repulsion

It's been a while since I've seen Repulsion, but The Tenant always stood out to me more. It's just a weird moody movie overall, but that ending really disturbed me! Especially how he jumped twice!

You're right Box. I don't think I considered the magnitude of how disturbing that is him jumping twice.. He was that determined. Like it was in his destiny to have the same fate as Simone, the previous tenant, no matter what.. Good point.
