Arguably two of the best directors who debuted in the '80s with some pretty similar parallels - in addition to their films largely being horror / comedies, they readily dabble in the horrors of medical science gone wrong. And the consensus is that their first two films are also their best and most widely acclaimed. I don't think there's any disputing that.

Who's your favorite of the two? And how would you rank each of their first two movies?

I think I would take Stuart Gordon, but only ever so slightly. It's a tough one.

Ranking their masterpieces:

Re-Animator
Brain Damage
From Beyond
Basket Case

Feel free to rank all of their movies if you'd like, too.

This is the kind of topic that Johan would like. He has been quiet recently..

anyway..

Here is how I would rank and rate them (of what I seen)..

Frank Henenlotter:

Frankenhooker (1990) 7
Basket Case (1982) 6
Brain Damage (1988) 6

Stuart Gordon:

Dagon (2001) 8
Re-Animator (1985) 7
From Beyond (1986) 6
Dolls (1987) 4

I would like to see Stuck (2007) from Gordon. These two directors would not be among my favorites but I like a few of their movies. I would probably side with Stuart Gordon.

They are two of the greats, but I would definitely have to go with Gordon. Henenlotter only has the few movies. Basket Case and Brain Damage are classics, Frankenhooker is good, Bad Biology is okay, and the Basket Case sequels are disappointing. Gordon has a much longer and varied career, and he really doesn't have a bad movie. Re-Animator, From Beyond, Fortress, Dagon, King of the Ants, and Edmond are all great, and the rest are at least entertaining.

I think I know you well enough to know you'd pick Henenlotter.

Re-Animator
Basket Case
Brain Damage
From Beyond

While Gordon's Re-Animator is my favorite of both filmographies, I prefer Henenlotter overall as a director. I enjoy all of his movies, at least up to Bad Biology. Haven't seen any of his newer work. I'm not quite as familar with Gordon's work, yet of his few movies I've seen, there's already one I didn't like: Dolls.

Henenlotter
Basket Case
Brain Damage
Bad Biology
Frankenhooker
Basket Case 2
Basket Case 3

Gordon
Re-Animator
From Beyond
King of the Ants
Dolls

Don't let Johan hear you dissin' Dolls like that!

Yeah, I hear ya. Dolls never did much for me either.

I've had the urge to watch the Basket Case sequels lately. I don't remember part 2 being all that bad.

They're both pretty awesome, and I can proudly say that I've met them both. Stuart is cool in the sense that he does a lot of HP Lovecraft stories and some Full Moon type movies. Re-Animator is great, and From Beyond is also pretty cool.

Henenlotter though? A rock solid filmography, albeit unfortunately short at only 6 movies, but I really love all those movies. Even the bad ones.

Best to worst:

Brain Damage
Basket Case
Re-Animator
From Hell

Henenlotter for the win

I've always been more of a Stuart Gordon fan, personally, but I will stew on it this weekend and see if I can come up with anything worth saying about this...

Wait has anyone mentioned Brian Yuzna on this thread? Seems like he should be part of the discussion somewhere.

Stuart Gordon easily for me. I picked Re-Animator #2 in the draft for a reason, that film changed me as a young teen into a certified gorehound. His entries in the Masters of Horror series, Dreams in the Witch House and The Black Cat are 2 of my favorites of the series, only topped by Cigarette Burns, Imprint and Pelts imo.

Believe it or not, I've never seen any of Henenlotter's movies.

I have seen a bunch of Stuart Gordon's - From Beyond, Pit and the Pendulum, Re-animator, Bride of Re-animator, Dagon, and Castle Freak. All were pretty good except maybe Dagon.

What's with most people hating on Dolls here? I guess pretty much everyone knows it's one of my faves.

From Gordon I also like Re-Animator and Pit and the Pendulum enough to have it in my collection. Castle Freak not too bad either. I didn't care much for Dagon or From Beyond. Not sure why the latter is liked so much or is it just because of Babs Crampton in some BDSM outfit, well she is much hoter in Re-Animator anyway.

From Henenlotter I have only seen 3 well actually 4 as he is also credited as director of Herschell Gordon Lewis: The Godfather of Gore documentary. I liked Brain Damage well enough but not as must have. The idea of Brain Damage was good but somehow I didn't care much for the execution not sure why. Frankenhooker is unsurprisingly totally up my alley, own it and the docu as well.
