Damn, that scene chills me to the bone. I'll try to elaborate

1. It starts off with that terribly depressing song, "The Midnight Special." I like plenty of CCR songs, but this definitely isn't one of them. It's depressing in a way that I find the MASH theme song depressing, except this one gives me the willies too.

2. Two recognizable faces in Dan Aykroyd and Albert Brooks. Something about seeing two very well-known actors not normally recognized for horror lulls me into a false sense of security.

3. They begin playing TV trivia humming theme songs to well-known, instantly recognizable television shows, which I think also lulls me into some kinda false sense of security. These are just two guys having a good time, much in the way I've seen myself act numerous times. There's this sense of realism. When the Twilight Zone theme comes up, there's this sorta sinister presence that slowly begins to emerge, like "oh, fuck. Now you did it."

4. "Wanna see something really scary?" No, I don't! Lol. First of all, no way in hell would I pull over in the middle of nowhere like that in the dead of night. I just wouldn't.

5. When Dan Aykroyd makes this exaggerated face and holds his finger up with this wicked sense of glee like "now you're gonna get it," it just freaks me out.

6. The fact that not only does he turn into a monster and now you're face to face with this hideous thing in the middle of fucking nowhere, but the idea that he turns into one so damn quickly. There's no metamorphosis or painful body horror transformations. He just turns his head and "bam!" It just freaks me the hell out.

7. The fact that, for no good reason, he's a monster and that what if, Albert Brooks' character said he DIDN'T want to see something scary...would he have been spared?

I don't know. What do you all think? Do you find this scene scary? What movie scenes, if any, have that sorta creepy impending doom type feeling that never fail to have an effect on you? The thing behind the dumpster in Mulholland Drive has a similar vibe, I think. Where things just feel "wrong."

I haven't seen The Twilight Zone: The Movie. I have it orered so it should arrive in the next few days, and I will check it out, and get back to you.

Some movie scenes that creepe me out would be:

1) The ending to Sleepaway Camp (1983) - sweet jesus! One of the creepiest endings to a horror film in my opinion.

2) Messiah of Evil (1973) - the theater and supermarket scenes.

3) Don't Go to Sleep (1982 TV Movie) - the ening when the ghost pops up and says, "Hi, Mommy!"

4) Guinea Pig: Flower of Flesh and Blood (1985) - the whole film, but especially the ending where the woman was killed. Charlie Sheen thought it was for real and contacted the FBI.

5) Tetsuo, the Iron Man (1989) - the whole film feels like a nightmare.

6) The Woman in Black (1989 TV Movie) - where the woman in black pays a visit to the solicitor in his bedroom. Commonly referred to as "that scene".

7) Hellbound: Hellraiser II (1988) - "The doctor is in!"

...to name a few...

also these following movies I found had plenty of creepy scenes:

Hellraiser
Suspiria
Sole Survivor
The Demon Murder Case
Ghosthouse
Burnt Offerings
The Exorcist
The Poughkeepsie Tapes
Salem's Lot
The Evil Dead
Aswang
The Mothman Prophecies
Mutants
The Haunted (1991)
The Boogey Man (1980)
The Dead Pit
The Appointment
Demons 6: De Profundis (1989)
13 Gantry Row
The Void
Death of a Ghost Hunter
Insidious
Pet Sematary
The Possession of Michael D.
Session 9
The Haunting
The Taking of Deborah Logan
Ghostwatch
The Norliss Tapes
Mill of the Stone Women

Sorry, didn't mean to spoil it for you. Figured everyone had seen it by now. Don't worry. It has nothing to do with the rest of the film. 3 out of the 4 stories are really, really good by the way. Enjoy it.

1. Love Sleepaway Camp, but never found the ending creepy. Just really bizarre, in a good way, of course.

2. Not a fan of Messiah of Evil, at all. Those are the only two good scene, imo.

3. Dang, I need to see this already.

4. I wonder what the real circumstances are behind Charlie Sheen and that whole thing. Like, is it really, really true? Totally fabricated? Exaggerated?

5. Started watching this once, didn't like it, never finished it.

6. Haven't seen this either.

7. Cool movie and scene, and the Doctor cenobite is probably the best damn cenobite in the whole franchise. The way he laughs is kinda creepy in a weird, kinda perverse way.

The ending of Burnt Offerings is pretty creepy. I wish I'd seen this as a kid, cuz I've no doubt the chaffauer would've been the thing of nightmares, but I saw it as an adult, so the effect wasn't as great on me, alas.

The Haunted is hilariously cheesy, imo. When the ghost ends up raping the father (is that right? I don't remember), I just about lost my shit. Funniest thing ever.

The Boogeyman, agree with you there. The guy with the pantyhose on his head, yup...a chilling image. The VHS cover used to conjure up all kinds of images for me as a kid.

Your point number 7 is what gets me the most. These dudes are friends. They have the banter to prove it, then for no other reason than to be a dick, Aykroyd decides his "friend" needs to be scared... to death. What a jerk.

I haven't seen this movie in years. It's one I need to revisit. I do vaguely remember the scene you're talking about and yeah it's creepy.

For me, the opening scene felt too tongue-in-cheek to be scary. The Twilight Zone doesn't really work in the 80's, imo, or any other time than when the original aired. I did like the second story with the little asshole that wanted to control everyone. I'd actually prefer that to the original episode. I can do without the whole movie, aside from that. Midnight Special kicks ass!

sfpx, I'm on your side on this one. That scene is seriously scary. It just GETS me every time I've ever seen it.

I agree that it might be partly because it's two well-known comic actors in the car, so you can't help but relax and expect something silly, dumb, and funny. Then he does THAT... Jesus.

Were they supposed to be friends? Are you sure? I thought the Dan Ackroyd character was supposed to be a hitchhiker.

When you ask what secenes it reminds me of, I don't know if I can really defend this, but I think of the scene when Angela does something extremely yucky to Stooge, in Night of the Demons (1988). That scene isn't really as bad, because you know something bad is gonna happen, but you don't know it'll be THAT bad.

I always thought they were friends. They sure seemed to be at least, but perhaps I'm wrong.

If they are friends, it's actually a hell of a life creepier. The realization that your supposed friend is a monster, all this time, and is meticulously calculating the right time to do you in. AND...in such a way, that, if you think about it....Albert Brooks' character asked for it. Aykroyd's character kept asking "are you sure?" like, giving him one last chance to change his mind and say no, thereby saving his life. Pretty fucked up.

Its kinda like a be careful what you wish for scenario.

Yeah, that would be creepier. That idea would merit a movie all to itself, actually.

PS That scene would make a really good Creepypasta. I mean, exactly the same story, but just telling it in that Creepypasta style would be really scary.

I've always liked that scene. It's a creepy situation and one of the better parts of the movie.

I was watching The Burning a few minutes ago and there's one scene that always sticks with me because of its impending doom vibe. It's when the campers are on the makeshift raft and they find a missing canoe. You know something bad is about to happen, but they don't. They're in good spirits and think their day is about to improve. If only they'd listened to the counselor who told them to not make any side trips.
