I know, I know. If you've been on the internet for more than a year, this question is like for Horror Nerds 101 (nerd? Speak for yourself, bub!) I myself have been using the internet for, Christ, about 20 years now, so I've answered this question - on multiple message boards and chatrooms - tirelessly, and with fluctuating answers at that.

I was a Dawn of the Dead junkie for a good while there (isn't everyone at some point?) Then one day (he was shooting up some food, and up from the ground...ahem, sorry) I succumbed to the brilliance of Day. It was that slow build of impending doom that you feel throughout the events of the film while our characters systematically fall apart that had me calling Day my number one for probably about 15 years or so.

But recently, I've come back around to Dawn (of course, it isn't easy to make a clear decision, since they're all brilliant). Dawn of the Dead has that awesome '70s look and feel; it essentially acts as a time capsule to a decade I never got to experience first hand. Of course, that in itself wouldn't be enough for me to call it a favorite, but luckily, it's pretty much universally agreed upon that it's a masterpiece not just in the world of horror, but filmmaking in general.

Night is the classic that started it all, but at no point in time was it ever my favorite.

So, where do you stand?

Day. I think it's easily the scariest and most interesting. I know it's not a popular opinion, but Dawn is actually my least favorite of the three, not that it's bad or anything, but it's not particularly scary or funny. It doesn't even really seem like much of a horror movie to me, more like an action adventure romp. And over 2 hours is way too long for a zombie movie.

Yeah, Day is by far the scariest. I was 12 when I rented it and man, what a truly nightmarish film it was to a young set of eyes.

When I was a teenager, I'm pretty sure Dawn was my favorite, and I still feel like it's the best all around movie. Nowhere near the best zombie movie, though, imo. In my 20's, I was all about Day, being that it was so dark and ballsy. I might need to give that one a rewatch soon. Been a while. But now, I've come to the conclusion that Night Of The Living Dead is the all-time greatest Hororr film. There's nothing quite like the NOTLD atmosphere. Not to mention the influence it's had on the genre. Not only is this the beginning of modern Horror but the last great classic black and white hororr film.

I need to rewatch Night. It's been a while. Maybe tonight, actually.

Hey, kinda random, but what's the first movie made as a direct influence of Night of the Living Dead? Is it Tombs of the Blind Dead? Anything earlier? Oh, wait. I Drink Your Blood maybe? Not zombies, but wasn't Night a huge influence on the film?

Jesus Christ I just asked you like 5,000 questions .

Well I wouldn't know the answer it could also be Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things (1972) certainly towards the end you see the inspiration from Night.

Romero might have gotten his inspiration for Night from movies such as Invisible Invaders (1959) and Creature with the Atom Brain (1955).

Dawn also used to be my favorite. First saw it as a teenager who didn't know much about horror and it rocked my world. I'd never seen anything like it. It was serious and violent, yet at the same time, the dialogue and music added a fun factor to it. I was obsessed!

Day on the other hand, while it possessed the same seriousness and violence, it lacked a lot of the same fun. It was dark and depressing. However, I think that even back then, I knew it was a great movie even if it didn't appeal to me as much. I certainly watched it plenty. Might've helped that I owned it (blind buy) and therefore had constant access to it, whereas Dawn was just a rental.

Not sure when exactly it happened, but one day, I just started calling Day my favorite and I still call it my favorite. I still love Dawn too, but when I want the ultimate zombie film, I go with Day. Everything about it is just perfect. The score, the characters, the pacing. And most importantly, the make-up and effects. Holy shit.

So, what about Night? Well, it's plenty great too. I'll never prefer it over Dawn or Day though.

What you were already using the internet when you were just a little Bry-Bry, aw cute emoticon

Well hard to disagree on you there. For a long time I considered Dawn as the ultimate zombie movie and somehow it's always the first zombie movie I think of when speaking of zombie apocalypse. However I think Day is plot and character wise certainly the superior movie. The old conflict between science and the army. The one is for knowledge and evolution the other for power and destruction of the unknown. It's played out to near perfection I think and ends with some very nice graphic scenes towards the end.

And then there is Night I don't think it was ever my favorite either. However a revisit last year of all 3 movies I must say I enjoyed Night the most. It has this atmosphere that claustrophobic feeling that is hard to compete with, a very uncomfortable feeling and uneasy sense of dread.

So it's too hard to pick all 3 have their merits and it's hard to judge them separately. If you made me choose I would probably go for Night, they really do not make a movie like that any more.

Big fan of the whole trilogy but always said on the old HB that Day is my favorite. For me 80's horror was the pinnacle of the genre which Day falls into.

There are plenty of great replies on this thread, so mine probably wont add much, but I'll try to ramble on...

Dawn of the Dead is my favorite. Hands down. Romero's characters in these movies are always great, but this movie was something else for me. I was so invested in this movie when I first saw it. Back when I was first getting into the genre.

Everyone likes Night, because like Tromafreak says, it pretty much is the greatest horror film of all time. A real gut-punch of an ending, and I can only imagine how cool this would have been to see in a theater back in the day. One of the most groundbreaking films of all time, and now it's a public domain film that most people kind of overlook. Oh well.

Day is more gloomy and has superior effects, but I'll be honest. I was a little disappointed with it after seeing Dawn and obsessing about how cool it was. I loved Dawn so much, I ordered Day shortly after, and it was just okay. Don't get me wrong, I've grown to love it like a lot of other horror films, but at the time... no one could beat Ken Foree!

Sure, Dawn has shitty grey-painted zombies, but it was just so damn fun. In fact, it never gets boring, despite being long, and having even longer extended cuts out there. Where NIGHT is the ultimate horror movie, DAWN is the ultimate zombie survival movie. DAY is like the... uhhh... Biggest piece of meat in the cave!

Well the bad make-up os the zombies that's what I often hear of people who don't like Dawn (usually the ones who think the average remake is the best zombie flick). I remember we had 1 guy (Lazarillo?) who was starting every 2-3 weeks some Dawn of the Dead remake praising thread on the old imdb.
Nevertheless when I first saw Dawn I wasn't really bothered about the make-up and still I ain't. It's the running zombies that bother me. I've said it countless times a zombie is an undead with very basic skills and brains, running makes no sense. They overcome being slow with being hard to kill, being pretty powerful and of course they usually operate in large numbers.
Dawn invests in the characters and you grow to like them something the remake didn't really offer since they were a bunch of a-holes.

Come to think of it.. you are right. They were all pretty much a-holes. Although the pregnant Russian woman was the only character I think I half cared for (her fate, and the one of her unborn child, being inevitable).

I think Day was the very first horror movie I saw (or it was Alien), but for some reason I have not seen it again since. I've only seen Dawn once too.. so I don't remember too much about it except the zombies looked rubbish. So I don't think I am in a position to say which is my favourite but Night is only one I own and have seen on numerous occassions. As Troma says, it's overall atmosphere is pretty much unrivalled in horror.

I love all three so much, but if I have to choose, it would be Dawn of the Dead. Although the zombies don't look the best and some of the effects haven't held up the best, it's an absolute blast to watch and the social commentary is the best in the entire series (still feels relevant 40 years later too). The characters are all very memorable and fleshed out too (pun not intended!).

Day of the Dead is a close second for me. Even though Romero didn't get the budget he wanted for it, he still made a damn fine movie. It has the best effects in the series with some awesome 80's atmosphere to boot. As others have mentioned, the tension and build up are top notch too. It was also smart on Romero's part to include the scientific prespective in regards to the undead outbreak, which helps it stand out from the other entries in the series.

Night of the Living Dead I love too, but not as much as Dawn and Day. I still find myself rewatching it as much as the other two because of the awesome atmosphere and nail-biting tension. I also give it props for having such a downbeat ending. It's certainly earned its place in film history because of how it was made and how much it shaped horror/zombies in general.

Definitely Day for me. I love the whole claustrophobic feel to it. It's by far the darkest of the three in tone. I love movies that are bleak. Also, Rhodes death while he screams"Choke on 'em" is damn awesome.

I'm assuming we're not including any remakes? :P

Dawn is probably my favourite of the 3. Just a fun film overall; while not overly scary, it does have it's intense moments.
