American Honey has plenty going for it, beautiful cinematography, great naturalistic acting, dogs & mescal. However it also has, for me, a lot of negatives: a bum numbing 163mins with dozens of shots that are minutes longer than they need to be. An inordinate amount of musical sing along dance numbers that grate more an more as the film goes on. And a repetativeness in general as the story goes nowhere, seemingly recycling events every half hour or so.

image I'm a fan of Andrea Arnold's work, love Red Road (2006) and Fish Tank (2010) was a decent effort but AmHon just frustrated. Almost every actor turns in a good performance, from newcomer Sasha Lane to modern dance loving Indy Jr wierdo Shia LeBeouf. Yeah i said it, he is pretty good in this. While it's a little unfair to call this a 'terrible' movie (it isn't) it did get me thinking about the best acting performance in the worst film.

I thought Da Vinci Code was an absolute mess, but Paul Bettany's flagellant monk was awesome. Jodie Foster in Elysium, or The Brave One, or Panic Room... thinking about it i reckon Walken & Henriksen must've been in a few.

Top spot has to be Gary Oldman in Tiptoes (2003), where he plays a dwarf alongside Peter Dinklage. Oldman spent the shoot on his knees or in the sofa (see below) giving Day Lewis a run for extreme method staying in character.

Soooo... which shitty films have the greatest performances in your opinion?

Haven't seen that one, foz...

...I just posted Savage Weekend in Johan's thread. I don't consider it a bad film since I personally love it, but it's 4.5/10 on IMDB so I'll use it as an example. I thought Christopher Allport did a great job in that one.

Savage Weekend is on my watchlist, looks interesting. I see Allport is also in the Jack Frost movies, a real masked killer aficionado!

Have you ever seen Little Criminals (1995)... although not necessarily a bad movie, there were some great performances, even if the story was a bit lame.

Nope, but it appears to have won awards, been critically acclaimed & has a score above 8 on imdb. However I should have realsied asking this sort of question was alwasy going to throw up opinion based answers on 'best' and 'terrible'. Should throw up some recs though so all good.

haha, absolutely no problem! any response in context or otherwise is appreciated. in fact you suggesting decent films is better for potential viewing. though i'm curious about star turns in dismal flicks, i prob wouldn't want to watch them if they're that bad

also no worries about messing up threads, i usually accomplish that on my own and others with misspelt, ill advised replies, or a poor attempt at humour. mess up the shoutbox all the time!

i'd never heard of Jacknife, but it has a relatively positive score on imdb, is it really that bad? De Niro did come to mind whilst writing this post - he's been excellent in many a classic, and poor in many a dud, almost to the point of tarnishing his career last 5 or 10 years

Well you asked for it Foz so you will get it emoticon

Final Girl has many flaws but Abigail Breslin is top notch in acting and appearance!

Burial Ground my favorite bad movie, actually the acting is below par too but Peter Bark plays the most convincing creepy kid while being an adult!

haha, i agree with you completely regarding Abi n Final Girl, but wait, is that you admitting it's a terrible movie?

Burial Ground is a good shout, not the worst zombie film by a long shot, prob one of the best. good ol fashioned sleazy trashy fun

Well no I wouldn't say Final Girl is terrible but it's far from perfect I am the first to admit that. Abbie was the main and maybe the only reason I wanted to watch it. Bar Zombieland (due to her role severely limited) she makes any movie better she is in.

Strike Commando 2 is average at best Italian action rip off trash. The first stars Reb Brown and is glorious, the second stars Brent Huff and is largely forgettable. Except for Richard Harris, playing it totally straight and dignified. The effect is unexpected, as generally fine actors would either sleepwalk it or ham it right up appearing in Eurotrash stuff. Free holiday and all that. But Harris is a true professional. It's intriguing, almost moving.
