For the longest time, Blade Runner 1982 was the only one of its kind. Of course, you'd get a new version every so often to keep you drooling, but it's still basically the same one movie. The movie invented the tech noir genre and made it great because of that beautifully brooding aesthetic and score. It's very noir, but in a futuristic setting. It offers some interesting questions on what it is to be human, and the cast rocks. It's a perfect movie, so it makes sense why sci-fi nerds love it so much. There really wasn't anything else like it.

Come along 2017 and a sequel hits. Did the original need a sequel? Not really. It's an open and shut story, but eventually, everything gets a sequel. So how do you compete with the original classic? Easy. Get the original gang back together and magic shit happens.

I rewatched 2049 since I must have been obliterated when I first watched and remembered nothing about it. But... I thought it was pretty great. It honors the original, but it also has its own flavor and does something new. Artsy, interesting tech themes, more good android/human philosophy, and some great (even tense) scenes. Ryan Gosling made good use of his emotions and lackthereof. Harrison Ford also had plenty of time to emote, so he got to do a bit more "acting" rather than merely rely on his bad-ass presence. For a sequel so late in the game, it had a lot to live up to. I think it did a good job.

It was around the development of Prometheus (2012) that Ridley Scott renewed his interest in sci-fi. He pushed the idea that Alien existed in the Blade Runner universe, which would put a lot of crazy thoughts into anybody's head. Of course, Blade Runner was also known to have Soldier (1998) as a sequel of sorts. Set in the same universe apparently, but not blatantly made mention of in any way. That one dealt with one of the off-world communities that Blade Runner's Los Angeles-centric stories only talk about. It's not a bad movie, so I don't mind this connection, but it seems rather erroneous. The Alien relation seems cool, but it doesn't strike me as definite. Especially when you throw in AvP stuff into the mix, which would then include Predator, so it gets a bit jarring. Either way, these are mostly theoretical connections. Unless the story is directly about Blade Runners, then it isn't part of the strict canon.

Amazon just announced that they're making a "Blade Runner: 2099" series. This is 50 years after Part 2, so none of our core characters should be alive at that point. (This is also the same year as a lot of Marvel comics based on future rehashes of popular characters, like "Spider-Man 2099").

So what kind of mind-blowing sci-fi can they pull? Haven't they covered all the good topics by now? Will I even care? I'm not sure I like the idea of something I love getting milked dry in an ongoing series. The first sequel came out about 35 years after the first. Is it too early to dive into that well again?

I saw a few episodes of Blade Runner: Black Lotus, and I thought they did a pretty good job with it. It had that general 80s feel, done just about right, but in an imaginary future extrapolated from the 80s, of course. I think the main character was probably inspired at least a little by Alice from the Resident Evil franchise.

Anyway, I would be totally on board with the series you are talking about. I will look forward to seeing it. It is at least possible, by the way, that some of the characters from the 1982 and/or 2017 films will be brought back! They could be "gholas," sort of, like the Duncan Idaho clones in some of the Dune sequels. Or, hey, if the characters are basically just manufactured goods, they could just be the same model produced again in the future, for retro aesthetic reasons by some decadent elite class, or whatever.

I never even heard of Black Lotus. But I see that it's anime, so I'm going to continue pretending that I never heard of it.

It is entirely possible to bring back the cast now that you mention it, but even those involved in the movie wont likely even have relatives down the line to keep them relevant another 50 years later, so it's still doubtful the characters will return.

Wait, you might want to give Black Lotus a chance. I don't know why they even called it anime. I would not use that word for it. It's done in some kind of style of CGI, I would not know the exact terminology for it. It makes me think of clips from some of the Resident Evil games, the way the images of the characters are designed, and how they move around... I have not played those games, but people post clips on Youtube sometimes. Anyway, it has kind of a cool look to it, maybe you could just watch it for a minute or two and decide if you wanted to stick with it. Your call, of course.

Blade Runner was an epic film that I watched so many times on VHS in the 80s I wore the cassette ragged as a kid. I would even go as far as saying it's my favorite Scott film slightly edging out Alien. Rutger Hauer was unbelievable as the villain but I always considered him more of an anti-hero...all he wanted was more life. Denis Villeneuve is a pretty great director, probably the last great director of this time. New directors are cast now like actors, none are given creative control. I'm not a Dune fan in the least. I hated Lynch's version from the 80s...so did he since he disowned it due to studio interference and I love just about everything from the 80s. Villeneuve's Dune was the best picture from last year IMO. I can't remember a SciFy epic that the studios backed with that kinda budget and cast. Don't bother saying the Disney Star Wars trilogy...please that shit was terrible and that's why they haven't made a film since and have relegated that crap to streaming series content. Blade Runner 2049 was a good film cause of Villeneuve's direction and style, if Scott directed it I doubt it would have been half as good...more like another Prometheus. I find it sad that they're making this into a series... they're killing cinema for this fast food streaming series bullshit imo. I won't be watching.

I think BR might out edge out Alien for me too. As far as his sci-fi stuff goes, I did like Prometheus too, but not so much Alien Covenant.

Studios definitely don't give directors the right to direct things as they will. Marvel is a big example of this, where even the 'unique' entries in a series are still flavored exactly like the rest. They're all stepping into a big machine, but it's locked into autopilot mode.

I absolutely cannot and will not defend Star Wars. I did enjoy The Rise of Skywalker and Rogue One, but that's not an invitation for more, which the studios decided to milk some more anyway. Now, that prequel Rogue One is getting another prequel, and I just don't get it. I haven't watched any of those shows, though I did try some Mandalorian. Overrated and underwhelming. Pass. I hate all Disney stuff though. I'm probably racist and sexist or something.

BR 2049 did have style, though I have no interest in Dune. Seems boring.
