I used to despise her in this. After watching it for maybe the dozenth time, I finally realized how good she played it. The character is a total victim, having been coaxed into a lifestyle she said from the get-go she wasn't interested in. Her heart was always for someone else (James Woods, sporting a mustache), but De Niro cages her.

Maybe it's a dude thing. She's a woman, so I shouldn't care about her plight, but a fat bowl will do that to ya. A fat bowl will make you think! And overthink!

I believe she won an Oscar for Best Actress for this part when that actually meant the best performance won the award for that year. Not so imo the past decade or so, politics has always played a part but never so much as recently. Pesci and Woods really stole the show in this film imo. I don't recall if Woods was nominated but he should have been imo, he never gets the recognition he deserves. The only part I recall of his of recent times is the 1st season of Ray Donovan where he played a Whitey Bulger type character which he crushed. He's been blackballed in Hollywood like others for his political beliefs..reverse McCarthyism in the 21st century.

I wanted to watch this again for the challenge but it's not available to either rent or buy in the UK. How stupid is that.

Yeah, you're right after looking it up. Honestly, do you think Susan Sarandon deserved it for Dead Man Walking looking back now? That film was overrated then and forgotten now...weak.

I think that was one of those movies which, if not for the two central performances would be pretty weak and forgettable. I remember her performance being very good (along with Sean Penn) but it's been so long since I've seen Casino that I couldn't say which was more deserving. But hey, how often does the right actor/movie/director ever get the Oscar.

Just looked up best actor winners and you're right. Not a lot of ones that wow me. At least Joe Pesci got one for Goodfellas.

For recent years, I am glad Joaquin got it for Joker, but the sequel may ruin everything if it ends up being a goddamn musical. emoticon

Not very keen on Lady Gaga in a singing Harley Quinn number then?

Not really, but not because I have any feelings about her whatsoever. Just because she sings doesn't mean she should. Save that musical shit for animation. It's less agravating that way. If she wants to act like a regular lunatic, that would be fine.

I pretty much stopped watching and paying attention to the Oscars ever since Ellen Burnsyn lost Best Actress for Required for a Dream to Julia Roberts Erin Brockovich over 20 yrs ago. Politics trumps performance.
