Dexter

Dec 2021
We're a little over halfway in the season of Dexter: New Blood, and they're starting to throw a lot at us. I'm not sure how spoilery this thread will get, but the ending of the latest episode has me antsy to see what happens next.

So...

Harrison is a bit of a dick, Dexter is still leaving out too many details for him to truly connect with anyone, and Kurt is trying to win Harrison over. Dexter's gonna need to step up his game if he wants his son to not hate him!

And a somewhat unrelated question, especially when it comes to Showtime shows... Do you consider Dexter: New Blood as technically a different show since there's a time gap, different setting, and different imdb listing? Much like how Twin Peaks: The Return is credited as a separate entity from its original run? Or is it still the same fucking show to you? I'm not sure myself, because the tone is different, but it still follows the same narrative with the same principle cast. I guess the only real difference is that Cody and Astor no longer exist.

It'd be cool if it was season 9 and I kinda think of it that way but it's being treated like a different show, so, that means that's what it is. We don't make the rules. Sometimes "sequel shows" makes sense, but I don't think that's the case here.

It's the same show to me. I can't stand that it's under a different name because when I recommended it to someone who hasn't seen the show at all, I have to tell them to start with Dexter and not New Blood. I also want to add that Debbie is annoying af.emoticon

I think Deb has always been annoying, so her character is at least consistent. Her potty mouth always seemed pretty forced to me, but at least she's not as pointless as Musuka. After 8 seasons, that dude had absolutely no arc and never got involved in any worthwhile plotlines. Talk about a filler character.

I liked that guy though, he was pretty funny. They should have shown him more on the show.

Eh...as a wise man recently told me Dexter:New Blood is better than no new Dexter at all. I still think Dexter S6 which is by far the weakest season of the original series is far better than New Blood but that's just my opinion.

But as we're all well aware, Clancy Brown is an ominous motherfucker! Latest episode was good and things are getting intense. Very cat and mouse. Who knows how that cliffhanger will play out. Plus, the cameo was pretty neat.

Episode 8 thoughts?

All I can say is... FINALLY! Fun cat and mouse stuff, but this definitely ought to be a turning point since things came to light to several characters. Only 2 episodes left, so they better cram these episodes full!

I wish we'd get Dexter action like that more often. I wondered how exactly he's going to explain himself, and hopefully they won't skip right over it in the next episode, such as beginning with him saying, "and that's the whole story."

Also not sure how he's going to explain his leg. Hopefully not with, "I'm a clutz."

They usually only pull that "and that's the whole story" bullshit on sitcoms or just comedies in general. Hopefully we'll get a good 5 minute scene at least. It certainly deserves the time. Perhaps the season will end with Dexter and son killing old whatshisname together. Or perhaps a bit soon for that? Guess he's going down soon regardless but lots of stuff to happen in between and I can't even imagine how any of it will go.

I'm thinking Dexter will let Harrison's first kill be Kurt. It will be a significant moment for him considering Kurt was a friend turned enemy. I really don't know what direction the cop lady plot is going though. Will she hunt Dexter down or side with him? Or will Dexter weasel his way out of it like he often does? Also, since the season is almost over, I've heard it was a one-off, so will Dexter die? Or will he go on to teach his code?

Yeah, Dexter letting Harrison do it sounds like the most logical scenario. I doubt Dexter will die. Maybe she dies in a lazy attempt by the writers to avoid figuring it all out. Her siding with him sounds a bit far fetched as there doesn't even seem to be enough time left for her to process everything. I can see one thing conveniently coming to light that permanently throws her off his path. Any time Dexter comes up short for ideas, he seems to get lucky. I really hope this show goes on. We need this character. TV needs this character. I figure it had a long enough break for people to have missed it enough to want more than a single season. Maybe we'll be hearing an announcement in the coming weeks.

So far I wouldn't say this is a better show than the original by any means but I'm digging the location far more than Miami. It's just an all around different mood and feels like a different life, which it is.

Episode 9 spoilers... Glad we didn't skim over that conversation. Plenty of good material covered in that discussion. Could've gone either way, but I think it went the direction all the fans would have wanted. And with things handled, we have one episode left and a sort of Doakes situation all over again. I agree that it would be great to have this show keep going, and that all leans on what happens in the next episode. Like he said about his kill count... Go big or go home.

I thought the 1st half of the season was ok but the 2nd half has been really good imo. Last week's ep Big Game and especially this weeks The Family Business has made me a believer in New Blood. Looking forward to the finale next week.

So is it better than season 6 after all? Surely it has to be emoticon

Gotta see the finale to decide but I'm leaning towards New Blood due to Clancy Brown.

Well I just finished the finale, was New Blood better than Dexter S6 imo? Yes it was...reflecting back on it Dexter S6 was terrible, Colin Hanks was easily the worst baddie in the Dexter series. That being said, New Blood was watchable but not very good imo. The 2nd half of the season is much better than the 1st half but the finale left me disappointed. I can't see myself rewatching New Blood like I have the original Dexter series. I'm sure there will be plenty of those that disagree with me and loved New Blood and for those, I'm glad you did...it just didn't do it for me. Was New Blood better than Dexter S6?...yes but not by much.

The season finale currently has 4.7 on IMDb compared to 9.7 for the penultimate episode. Haven't started watching the series yet but sounds like a lot of people are disappointed...

I can honestly say I was enjoying the 1st two thirds of the finale, then the show takes a left turn and goes off the rails into the land of redonkulousness. Without going into spoilers, they ruined the ending of Dexter a 2nd time. I didn't hate the ending of Dexter S8, this finale I did. It makes me think why did they even bother?

My sister is in the same boat. She thinks they fucked up big time. Me? I just finished it, and hmmm.... still processing. I'll formulate some thoughts on this shitshow later.
