Like Blood Shack, this is another movie that features a character on the dvd cover art who isn't in the movie at all. They depict a wild-eyed psycho lady, but the killer in this movie is much more mild.

Damn, do I love the horror selection on Amazon Prime. This is a movie that's long been on my watchlist after having seen the Anchor Bay dvd advertised so regularly back in the day, but that misleading cover art made me a bit iffy. Frankly, the image of the woman trying to get through the door didn't do this movie any favors, so I'm glad that the actual movie wasn't like that.

This movie has a great aesthetic to it. It has a lot of autumnal imagery to it with the seasonal colored trees, almost like FleshEater in a way, and despite it's title of being on a mountain, this is actually more like a bayou junkheap setting with references to Louisiana. That imagery does wonders for what is sometimes a boring movie, but somewhat hypnotic at the same time.

A bunch of travelers stop at this grim motel as the rainy night gives them a reason, and the psycho old lady with a history of mental illness sneaks into their rooms through trap doors, putting snakes, rats, and roaches in there before she starts picking them off with a sickle.

Underneath that trap door is a series of tunnels that bears a strong resemblance to the lair of Madman Marz. The film itself almost shares the cheesy yet nightmarish quality of that film. This would be a great movie to get high and zone out to.

Care to elaborate as to why? I think it's pretty amusing, made even more funny by the fact that the less honorable characters seem to make it out alive. SPOILERS AHEAD...

The sheriff, who was too drunk to answer the snakebite call is the one who goes on to the final confrontation with Evelyn and defeats her. The guy who pretended to be in the music industry to bang those girls is one of the few who make it out alive. Out of the two girls he tries to make it with, the one who did fuck him for a head start lives while the girl who opted against it met a bloody demise. Karma? Never heard of her...

Bores me to tears. I rented it when I was a kid and remember thinking it was dull. Then, gave it another shot 5 or 6 years ago and felt no differently. I can't even remember anythng about it but I doubt this one is ever gonna win me over. Same story with The Prowler.

I had the DVD. I remember lying in bed with my first serious girlfriend back in 2001 watching it, the night before we flew to the Bahamas as a graduation present from my parents. I don't know why I remember weird stuff like that. I also remember I Spit on Your Grave as being the last movie I watched of the '90s. It was on New Year's Eve of 1999.

Mountaintop Motel Massacre is kinda ho-hum from what little of the film itself I do remember. Guess there was a reason it sat on the shelf for 3 years before finding distribution.

It isn't great by any means, but I find a certain charm to it for being kind of an awkward mess of an 80s slasher. Like seriously, who wants to watch a boring old lady kill people for no good reason other than "she's crazy"? But somehow... I kind of enjoyed it.

An awkward mess of an '80s slasher is one of the few things in life I'll happily sit through, no ifs, ands or butts about that.
