Maniac 2012

Feb '20
Can you believe this movie is almost 10 years old and I finally saw it? I've been reluctant because I like the original well enough, so when it comes to remakes, I'm always skeptical.

Director Franck Khalfoun's other somewhat popular movie P2 was a piece of shit, and Amityville Awakening was alright, but he got Elijah Wood in this movie? I suppose he looks somewhat evil at times, and this movie lets him shine. It's a pretty faithful remake, what with the mannequins and scalps and a similar ending.

Did I say scalps? That shit is pretty gross. That's one thing this movie's got going for it is some good gore and a good score.

I thought that POV style would annoy me, but it really didn't. It was more of a loose guideline than something strictly adhered to. This movie had a few good things going for it. Maybe Franck Khalfoun doesn't suck so hard after all.

Never saw P2 but I really liked this version of Maniac. It's almost as good as the original and, as you said, the music is fantastic. In fact the opening credits are what drew me in when I was skeptical. I still think I like the Lustig better though.

Yeah, no doubt the Lustig original is best, because without it, this movie wouldn't even exist. But the opening was definitely a cool moment. The scalping (which was streamlined for effect) was a very old school 80s slasher homage.

Skip P2. A woman gets stalked in a parking lot, and I found Wes Bentley's character to be incredibly stupid.

My response to this was originally something like "Frodo? Really? Yeah, get the fuck outta here!". Sounds like a bad April Fools joke. But this remake wasn't bad and Frodo actually did a good job. They should totally do a remake to the sequel that never happened, Maniac 2: Mr. Robbie.

I quite liked this one and actually prefer it over the 80s version. There is also a movie from the 30s called Maniac. It's pretty bad but notorious for some nudity and underwear shots. Also a cat gets molested. Ideal for turkey and b/w challenges.

Maniac 1934 is public domain trash that was probably offensive in its time. I don't mind it so much, but it's definitely not great. A trash challenge rewatch is a good idea.
