Between work and the commute to work, I usually only have a couple hours a day to myself, so bear with me if I seem like I've been lazy on here. Trust me, I haven't. I've been working on a slew of updates for TE that I'm so very close to completing. The only problem is my limited window in each day to work on these things, which is quite frustrating considering how little work I actually have left.

After some of our regulars decided to bail on us for no good reason, I've been promising that I'd do my best to improve the TE experience with new, more robust functionality, and I'm in the mood to ramble on about these things.

One thing I've been doing these past few days is restructuring the board system. Originally, a post could only be on one board, like most forums do. However, posts get lost in the sea of under-utilized boards, so after a while, I changed it up so a post could be on two boards. It seemed okay for a while, but the same lack of exposure befell posts again, and so I'm changing it up again. You'll soon be able to tag a post under as many boards as you want, and it'll automatically categorize them appropriately.

Say for example, you post a topic on the "Halloween" 1978 board. Your post will also be filed under the boards for Movies, Horror, and Thrillers/Suspense automatically. Posts will also be able to be moved to multiple boards just as easily. Therefore, the board index will function much more accurately, too.

Of course, with this added functionality, I have to manually go through about 2000 posts, but I'm halfway there! emoticon That's the hard part. Once that's done, I'll update the main forum, the post pages, TEDb, and that shitty FreeForums skin in no time.

Another big update that's taken me a bit longer to wrap my head around is a new dynamic markup editor that wont redirect you off the page, and you'll get live preview results. They call this a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor. So if you click the reply button, a box will pop up right under the post and you wont have to worry about [ b ] and [ url=blah blah ] tags, because you'll see the bold text text and the link as you make your post.

Of course, if you're old fashioned, the current way will still be available because I have to make this backwards compatible with all of our existing posts. The same thing goes for when you add or edit posts. You wont be redirected, and you'll see the formatting as you type. I have to do a lot of debugging to make sure I don't screw this up though, but it'll be pretty damn sleek once it's finished.

The home page will also probably be revamped, too. I don't think I'll include the post feed on there, but probably just a Board Index. This means I'll be removing subdomains, but nobody ever uses them anyway. I'll figure out a better use for those later.

Even with my efforts to make things easier for newbies to understand, I know that people will still have trouble with them, so I'm going to make the other skins more accessible, too, and that includes that stupid Facebook skin I've been designing on and off again these past few month. I figure a lot of our reliable users migrated to that shithole, so I might as well cater to them with something they'll recognize visually.

There will be a few more tweaks here and there, such as how you search and sort stuff, but the big changes revolve around the markup editor, the new board system, and the facebook skin. Hopefully, this stuff can be ready in time for the October Challenge, because that's always a big deal.

I really can't wait until I have this stuff all sorted out. Then, I can finally start working on CONTENT! Maybe, if we're lucky, we can lure back a few of our old regulars to this place with these epic redesigns, minimal drama, and high-end low-class trash!

All these updates are very welcome..

What I have noticed is the sheer amount of comments/activity that we got from SFPX thread. Even Peeptoad returned to post her list. What that tells me is that these type of threads I.e. "Your favourite Top tens" generate a lot of activity to the site perhaps even more so that the challenges. It reminds posters of the old Imdb days. If we were to post more of these threads maybe they will bring about more activity.

I try to make threads where I pose the question in a way that everyone will want to reply because hey, don't we all like to share our high and mighty opinions emoticon I know I do!

They are just a few ideas..

If you take into consideration posters who are no longer active but just lurk... Peeptoad for example, she must have seen SFPX's thread and decided to join in. Almost every active poster contributed to that thread - there must be a lesson there.

I know activity for the challenges is down (me included) but we need something out of the ordinary. I feel October will be the same. Johan's draft got big numbers and a lot of activity. We need something on that scale again.

I think the reason "top ten" and similar threads are popular has to do with the kind of interaction they offer. If someone posts a review, not everyone will have an opinion, especially if it's for a movie they've never seen. With a "top ten favorite horror movies" thread though, most posters are going to have an opinion.

As for challenges, I'm guessing for most posters, they're either burned out on challenges or don't have time for them. Or both. Do you have a reason much different from those two for why you don't participate in them anymore? And yes, sadly, the October Challenge will probably see the same drop in activity.

So what can we do about these problems? It's obvious more challenges aren't the answer. Not saying we should skip the Sci-Fi/Fantasy and October challenges, but we don't need to even think about concurrent mini challenges.

More "top ten" and similar threads would probably help. They should be spaced out though I believe or else they'll become dull real fast. A draft would be nice, but do we even have enough posters for a proper one at this point? Maybe if someone like peeptoad could be convinced to join in. A survey might stir up some activity, like sfpx's "Italian Horror Film Survey" from last year.

I think the kind of interaction that these threads offer is where the user base is at at this moment in time. Sadly, if we learnt anything from the Johan drama is that none of us react positively to reviews/Long posts and this is never more true especially to movies or directors that we have never heard of. I guess that is what frustrated Johan. He didn't like short replies and left.

In regards to challenges, and to speak frankly, and I can only speak for myself here - there is a real lack of enthusiasm on my part. Lack of participants could be the main reason, it has to be. Even for October - I will have to muster up some drive. It's sad, I know.

I am not saying roll out these threads hourly or even daily. Every couple of days may help to keep interest or even grow interest. The proof is there over 40 replies from essentially all of our user base. These type of things will help. I feel if we don't do something we could lose potentially more users, unfortunately.

I think if people want others to read their reviews, they have to keep them short and sweet. I know when I see one where the whole thing doesn't even fit on my screen, there's no way I'm reading it.

I agree. The moment I see one I just don't bother reading it. My interest is zero.

It's understandable. Markus and I talked about that actually, how competition makes challenges more fun. If there's no one to compete with, why make much of an effort? I'll participate in the October Challenge, but unless things change, whatever I watch will be because it's October and I like to watch horror movies instead of trying to complete or win the challenge.

I agree. I'll try to come up with something interesting along those lines to post. Not sure what to post at the moment, but that's a whole other issue. emoticon

It sucks. It would be great if they were getting big numbers, there would be so much fun. We used to get reasonable numbers for them but then people started leaving and interest waned. I am hosting the October challenge this year and I fear we will have the same numbers we are getting, maybe one or two more, but down on previous years, and I hate to see what next years numbers for it will be.

I don't why people just leave. Foz for example, seemed enthusiastic about the site, he didn't leave cause of politics (AFAIK) he must of just lost interest in us because he is still VERY active on LB. Why did he leave? The only logical conclusion I can think of is lack of film discussion, or at least discussion he may find interesting. I know there have been days here without much talk. We need to rectify that. That is point with those threads - to keep people interested. Otherwise they will leave.

Glad to hear you still intend to host the October Challenge. I've been wondering if you would or if I needed to find someone else. emoticon

You and I are on the same page. We need to focus less on long-winded posts most people won't read or reply to and more on simple posts that provide opportunities for discussion. Not like it'll make things worse if we try a different direction.

Not just peeptoad, jimb14red also joined in the discussion so yeah those kind of threads definitely attract more participation.

They really do, Markus. Yakko, Vince, Zombie all contributed with their lists before that they may have only been bystanders. We were not consciously aware that we were doing it, we just gravitated to it.
