The new season came out a few days ago and I didn't give two shits. Season 2 left a really bad taste in my mouth. It had no charm, I really hated Billie, the arc was underwhelming, and it seemed like a season of filler.

Season 3 is a comeback. Somehow, it glued me to the screen again, and I think that's because it had a very fun story this time around. David Harbour is going full Magnum PI with his look, and he's easily the best character on the show.

This season is set in the days leading up to July 4th of 1985, and it cashes in hard on the pop culture. We've got bits about Romero's Day of the Dead and Back to the Future and all sorts of other things. There's a whole Red Dawn plot about communists and evil scientists, and that plot in itself has a Terminator knockoff that I very much enjoyed. He's a Russian soldier who's in very many ways stylized to be Arnold from T1, with the hair and gloves and attitude.

It's also like the recent "Us" in that it deals with dopplegangers and underworlds, which leads to a lot of melting bodies and all sorts of bizarre monster/portal type shit.

Of course, there's also a lot of Fast Times references, since a major setting is that totally 80s mall, in which our character Steve works as a sailor looking ice cream vendor, and he wears that suit the entire season. emoticon

Very big improvement over the last season. Quite entertaining. If you watch it, look for as many pop culture references as you can. I'm sure there are a lot.

Enjoyed season 1 but I couldn't get through season 2. If this is an improvement, then I guess I will force myself. Maybe for the Sc-fi/fantasy challenge.

I'm two episodes in. It's okay. I heard it gets better in the second half of the season.

Sounds promising. Is the Matt Modine character still alive? Maybe they could do some kind of a Vision Quest reference with him. Or even if he's dead, they could do some kind of flashback, or whatever.

In the shopping mall scenes, they could do references to Night of the Comet! I would be into that. Or Chopping Mall... of course, that might be too much to hope for.

David Harbour is so funny. Is that video where he played Eleven well known?? It must be, or I wouldn't know about it. Well, my niece showed it to me, sooooo I don't know what that means... anyway, here it is:

*punches the guy many times*

No, Matthew Modine isn't in this one, but we do have Cary Elwes!

I liked how David Harbour played his character right at the beginning of the show. I wasn't sure if he was gonna be one of the good guys, or a bad guy. That's good when they do that, they make the viewer have a little journey in that way, in terms of how they/we feel about a character. I think they are doing that same thing now, in NOS4A2. There is a character who seemed good at first, but at this point his bad side is more prominent. Similarly, the main character's mom seemed like a complete dirtbag and loser at first, but I have more sympathy for her as the show goes along.

For some reason I cannot get into this show.. I saw the trailer for the first season and I wasnโ€™t a fan... Iโ€™ve heard AMAZING things about it, but maybe itโ€™s just not my type of thing๐Ÿคท๐Ÿฝโ€โ™€๏ธ

I finished this a few days ago. I agree, it's better than season two. They were wise to leave out a side story filler episode. That shit only dragged down season two further. Not much else to say about it. You already covered all the best parts: Magnum PI Hopper, Sailor Steve, Russian Terminator.

I'm not sure this show would be worth watching without the pop culture references. They feel like a crutch at times. I'll keep watching for now though.
