Terrifier

Oct '18
This is a pretty new clown/slasher movie that came onto netflix recently, and it had a bit of hype to it, so I went for it. It's got a throwback look to it, excessive gore, decent characters, and of course... one hell of a villain.

He's basically just a black and white painted mime, but he looks creepy enough, and has a big nose and bloody teeth, because he eats people's faces and whatnot... wears people's skin and hair... you know, whatever floats his boat. He'll brutally murder someone one second, then ride a tiny tricycle for laughs.

Most of the movie is dark and twisted, and while the plot isn't anything special, the execution and pacing are great. It isn't a long movie, and once it starts, it doesn't let up. Still, you know you're a sick fuck when you find some of his antics funny.

I kinda predicted the ending, but it's still a pretty good way to go out. I wouldn't be surprised if we saw more Terrifier movies. It looks like franchise material.

Favorite FTV of the year behind The Greasy Strangler. Should have waited a few weeks before watching it. Kick ass October viewing.

Just watched this today and was surprised by how good it was. Kind of expected a goofy throwback to the themed killer slashers of the '80s...but it was far darker than anticipated. Wouldn't mind checking this one out annually honestly.

That bit with the woman chained upside down... Yikes!

That was a very Ed Gein type of scene. Reminded me of "Deranged", only much more graphic.

Shit! I didn't know this was a sequel! They got me!

Anybody see All Hallows Eve 1 and/or 2? How do those compare?

More like a spinoff. The All Hallows Eve movies are anthology movies. Art the clown plays a part in the first one, but not part 2. They're watchable, but nothing special. Terrifier is much better.

I finally saw this. I don't know why it took me so long... well, whatever, I guess I was late to the party. Anyway, I can't believe I watched it right before going to bed. Miraculously enough, I don't think I had any nightmares.

Anyway, um... yeah! Quite a movie. Apparently it had a seriously low budget (35 thousand), so it gets a lot of extra points for packing such a massive bang for the buck. I thought it was quite good, especially considering the budget. It really captured the feeling of being alone late at night... say, between 2:00 and 4:00 AM, in a deserted, run down part of a small city. I guess those two girls were supposed to have parked a long-ish way from whatver nightclub they had been visiting. Anyway, that made it very effective to me, that feeling that you are almost totally on your own, and no one is likely to show up to help you.

I have not seen its precursor, All Hallows Eve... now I need to decide whether to watch that next, or go straight to Terrifier 2, which everybody only has been talking about for a while now.

Anyone reading this has probably seen it already, so I guess I don't need to post much detail about it. I'll just say again that I thought it captured that lonely feeling of being out very late at night in a sketchy area very well, and I thought the carnage was innovative, often abrupt enough to be startling, and overall it was very unsettling. Yeesh.

The late night isolation works quite well. And yes to the low budget angle. The sequel had a bigger budget, but still made a killing in the box office, especially for such a goddamn disgusting movie.

All Hallow's Eve is an okay movie. I barely remember the other two skits, but the clown's segment is good. He's a total creep, but it isn't the same actor as in the Terrifier movies. You'll find a blatant TCM reference at the beginning of his segment.

Do you know if it is established, or canonical for the franchise, that Art the clown is supposed to be supernatural? That would certainly be the least unreasonable explanation for how he revives in the morgue. That weird electronic interference stuff that happened just before he revived also leads me to think he was probably meant to be supernatural. But, it is remotely possible that they intended for us to consider him to have shot himself through the cheek, like Ed Norton in Fight Club, and for that to be the explanation of how he revived and resumed his gruesome lifestyle.

Also, I just wanted to say that the portrayal of the loneliness and isolation of the late night setting made me think of some of the short stories by Dennis Etchison. I have mentioned him before here, two or three times, I think. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dennis_Etchison

Watch part 2 and you'll have a definite answer.

I remember another urban-set late-night horror that felt isolated was "Butcher Boys" from 2012, a spiritual sequel to TCM. But I've heard of Dennis before. I'm always interested in hearing about H3 stuff.

I am still hoping to find a way to watch Terrifier 2 for free, sooo I haven't seen it yet. But, I wanted to mention that if you liked Terrifier, and are in the mood for something similar, you should try seeing the Jason Mewes movie Bitten (2008). It has a very similar feel to it, just in the sense that it mostly takes place very late at night in sort of an urban wasteland. In some ways it has a comparable sense of humor, too. Well, not really... just in the sense that the humor in it is very black. But, yeah, it just has the same vibe where you can feel the loneliness of life long after midnight, when practically everybody is asleep, and the only people you are likely to meet are probably up to no good.

I recall Bitten...it probably the only decent thing Mewes has done besides the View Askew universe.

I don't have a clown phobia, but they still creep me the hell out. The first half of the movie made me really uncomfortable, but the gore in this was so over the top it just became funny to me. I still haven't seen part 2 because it's so long. I'll get around to it on a day when I'm not tired, which is hardly ever these days. I tend to fall asleep during movies no matter if im enjoying it or not. Old lady problems.

I hear that. Runtime is too much of a deciding factor for me these days, yet I'm perfectly fine watching multiple episodes of a show rather than watching a single long movie. emoticon

While it is a surprisingly LONG movie, it's definitely worth a watch. It's so much meaner than the first movie, it becomes hilarious.

I can't even binge a show. After a couple of episodes I'm done until the next day.

That makes the fun last longer then. I'm not a fan of Netflix's binge model. I prefer the one episode per week format. It allows the hype to build up. It really annoys me that they'll release an entire season one day, then I have to dodge spoilers the very next day because some people have no lives and can't keep their damn mouths shut.

That's a good point actually. I felt pressure to finish season 4 of Stranger Things as quickly as possible for that very reason.

Not at all. No time for a life. Work here, sleep there, then only 5 or 6 hours left to watch TV. That's typically only enough time to watch half of a season. Such a tragic life...
