Aka "Aerobicide", Killer Workout starts off with a bang. We have someone getting burned by a tanning bed, right off the bat. It's like that Final Destination shit, only better. Then, we jump right into the best reason to watch this movie... to watch these women exercise.

image If you're anything like me, you'll find this stuff pretty hypnotic. God, there are some fine women in this movie. There's also a fat dude riding an exercise bike, but his fatness is only there to show us some contrast, so we can truly appreciate all the asses and big, bouncing titties in this movie.

It's easy to figure out what this premise would be. People are getting killed at the gym in various ways. Sometimes, it's a big hair pin, sometimes, it's with workout gear, like a weight. Sometimes, people aren't even getting killed, but rather just get the crap kicked out of them.

image There are several moments where these beefcakes will beat the hell out of each other. Sometimes without a good reason, but who needs an explanation in a movie like this? The guy finds two bodies in the gym, and another guy sees him standing there and assumes he did, and immediately starts beating the shit out of him. It's great. Some of the fight scenes are pretty solid, and they do a good job making it look real cool.

So yeah... as you can guess, all the pretty people with good bodies are getting killed, and there's this generic detective trying to solve the murders that happen almost daily. Yet, the establishment never shuts down. Nobody cares, and they keep working out, and we get plenty of scenes of women working out, in super sexual poses. Great bodies, great tits, and the violence ain't bad either.

Surprisingly watchable 80s cheese that delivers everything you need for a slasher of this era. And, of course... when the movie ends, we get... more footage of these fine women working out. I can't complain.

I have this on VHS around here somewhere. I haven't watched it in a long time, but I remember liking it. The director, David A. Prior also made the SOV classic Sledgehammer, and a bunch of ridiculous action movies, including the infamous Deadly Prey.

Another super cheesy health club horror I would recommend is Death Spa (1989).

I've seen "Deadly Prey", and that was a pretty cool movie. I'll be sure to keep my eye out for some more of his movies.

Mankillers is another solid Prior effort.

Blood Diner also came out in that year, 1987. I guess that year was pretty much the high point for bouncing babes in spandex leotards (or in spandex panties and not much else, in the case of Blood Diner... ooohhhhhhh God bless the director, all the actresses, and anyone else involved with that classic scene).

Hey, Return of the Living Dead 2 was filmed in 1987. It wasn't released until early 1988, but still. I have always thought Marsha Dietlein was quite the babe, when she was doing her aerobics in front of the TV in their house.

OK, I can't remember something without double checking... this is pathetic. I should know this. Was it Friday the 13th Part 3, or Halloween 2, that had the scenes of the male nurse or orderly guy in the hospital watching a hot girl do aerobics on TV? Possibly there was a similar scene in both movies... I can Google it, of course, but can you remember without checking?

That scene was in F13 part 4, in the beginning.

Yeah, I remember that scene/girl in RotLD2. Even though it's nothing too sexy, it still is pretty sexy either way.

I did see Blood Diner once, and I remember it being a decent Blood Feast ripoff, but I don't remember much specific about the movie. Needs a rewatch.

Part 4, that's right, thanks. I must be losing my mind, I should be able to remember these things.

Blood Diner is really funny, if you can get into the right frame of mind for it. Uncle Anwar is hilarious. I like how they use music at certain moments to make you feel more on the side of the psycho brothers, and make them into sympathetic characters, even though they are demon worshipping mad cultists. But most importantly of course... there's a topless aerobics scene. Nothing else matters.

Even in Blood Feast 2, you root for Fuad Ramses III, because he's such a likeable guy. Sometimes, the villains also happen to be the protagonists. Mostly the case when your regular characters are bland, or bullies.

I ought to bust out my Blood Diner dvd on that 6-movie Lionsgate pack. Aerobics stuff is always fun, right? As I was searching for pics of Killer Workout, there were results for Jamie Lee Curtis in that Travolta movie "Perfect" 1985. It's got a low rating, but those pics don't look half bad. You can see the nips through her blue outfit.

1987 was the year for crap/trash/cheese-horror films!

Seriously, ever look at all the titles like in imdb? It's never ending.

I think the general insanity of the 80's probably peaked right around 1987. There used to be discussions about this on IMDB, in the message boards for various movies. I agree with you about the crap/trash/cheese horror emoticon, and I think the same applies in music, to some extent. The last couple years of the 80's the wave of total big hair metal madness had sort of crested, and maybe started to subside a little. They set that Alec Baldwin rock musical Rock of Ages in 1987 for a reason, because that was the high point of all the mayhem. I have to check this more carefully, but I bet a lot of big hair stadium rock anthem bands like White Snake, Ratt, Warrant, Great White... they were at their peak insanity right around 1987.

There was still plenty of madness for awhile after that, but I think people were starting to look for something new. There started to be a few female folksy singers like Suzanne Vega, Tracy Chapman, Edie Brickell... maybe the music companies were trying to decide what would come next? Also, maybe people were sensing that the Reagan years were coming to a close, so maaybe there wasn't so much of a future in reacting to that type of conservatism? Not really too sure about that, I'm just bullshitting.

Yeah, 1987 seems like the most "80s" year in the 1980s, for, well, pretty much everything. 1988 and 1989 feel as though they have more in common with the early '90s, at least up until and through 1992, maybe '93 even.

I definitely agree that people were probably over the gaudy style of the '80s toward the end of the decade, thus lending itself more introspective singer-songwriters, like the ones you mentioned; also gritty hip hop, grunge, and even dance music had a harsher sound that I suppose people were able to take more seriously as a viable form of music.

In the world of movies, slashers gave rise to serial killer films, sequels more or less began to peter out with many of them relegated to direct-to-video status (one can only conclude the public's desire for them waned, budgets were reduced, etc.), and the Italian horror industry, with its increasingly ludicrous, cheesy, heinously dubbed and over the top glorified sex n' violence finally collapsed come the '90s.

The 90s seemed much more grounded in comparison, although of course there was still plenty of cross pollination and outdated styles and themes being employed by the less up-to-date types.

Don't know why or how I haven't seen Killer Workout yet. The first gif you posted begs me to rectify this.

Right? I can't get enough of it. Even though it's damn near 2mb, I still feel like it's the gif I needed to sell this movie. I also agree that 1987 was a great year. 1984 and 1987 are the most 80s years of the 80s.

All the women in that movie exercise as if they're trying to show off and improve their sex skills. It's wonderful.
