A few female coworkers have been watching movies at my place lately. I'm trying to educate them on good movies. Currently, the goal is to show them something disturbing, to mess them up.

I figured "Bug" 2006 would be a good place to start, but it didn't phase them so much. I'm thinking of whipping out the big guns, and showing them something like "Megan is Missing". I was creeped the fuck out by that movie, so that's my best idea for a disturbing movie.

What would you show to someone if you wanted to really unnerve them?

And why do you want to mess them up?

I just notice a topic about Lars von Trier, well he makes some disturbing movies maybe that's something. I saw Antichrist I think it is boring, but I guess there is quite some people who think it is shocking.

Why wouldn't I want to mess them up? emoticon

It was just the topic of discussion with them. Disturbing movies. They cry at a movie like Avengers, so you'd think they're easy, but maybe not. Gotta try harder I guess...

guess Irreversible is the obvious one, fantastic movie, maybe more uncomfortable than disturbing for women ( & men).

interesting though to specify disturbing for young women, saves just listing all the regs. maybe Girl Next Door? Megan is good shout, id also go Spoorloos/The Vanishing for along those lines.

I'll Never Die Alone, or any grim rape revenge Spit, Last House etc, but are they disturbing???hmmm

Perhaps a Culty one, JV Bebbers Manson or somesuch. Lilya 4 Ever for some sex traffic depression. disturb on the mother baby front, Rosemary or Sophie or Vera Drake. or kid killing/fiddling ala Antibodies.

you get to manipulate young female minds in a myriad of filmic ways Box, so whatever you choose is a win, open Pandora up n let rip

I'll look into some of those. I think rape/revenge might be a good option to look into. Probably the I Spit remake.

The Girl Next Door is a good choice, too. That was pretty fucked up.

They might opt for a slasher though. They mention Scream, but there are sooooo many better things out there...

Spoorloos is a good choice. Proof that movies don't need to be graphically violent to be disturbing and unsettling..

Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer. You said they might want a slasher. That has some slasher vibes. Plus it's got fucked up parts that mostly feel realistic, at least I've always thought so.

I'm not sure what else to recommend. I feel like you're going to have a difficult time disturbing them much. Even my suggestion would probably be a dud.

I might have mentioned Henry once, what with him being a real serial killer makes it more interesting. Plus, all these young kids only know Michael Rooker as Yondu, or Merl Dixon. He's fuckin' Henry Lee Lucas! Or Mr. Svenning from Mallrats.

Martyrs (2008) seems like a good, obvious choice.

I Saw The Devil (2010) might unnerve them, due to it's mean-spiritedness, and extremely graphic violence.

Audition (1999) works better if you don't say it's a horror movie, and just introduce it as a "romantic comedy".

Funny Games (2007) is definitely unsettling.

My avatar Oldboy (2003) is not exactly easy viewing, and the plot/ending is definitely messed-up.

Of course there is A Serbian Film (2010), but that might be throwing them too much in at the deep end.. or maybe just settle for something a bit more "fun" and lighthearted like The Human Centipede (2009) or Battle Royale (2000).

Most of these are options, that is if they don't mind reading subtitles.. most disturbing movies do tend to come with subs.

I'd like to watch I Saw the Devil again, but it's a pretty long movie... I like where your head is at, and I think I need to give Funny Games a watch. I'm guessing the 2007 one then? Did the same guy really make the same movie, twice? I know Hitchcock did that once, but I haven't actually seen that movie.

Right, they are both practically the same movie, with different actors. So if they are not big on subtitles, go with the American version. It's not really any worse but personally I still prefer the original.

Spoorloos/The Vanishing is another movie where the remake was done by the same director but avoid that one at all costs.

And yeah I Saw The Devil clocks in at well over 2 hours, although it never feels like it drags at any point. It is pretty intense and nerve-racking throughout.

Megan Is Missing would be a good one. If you really want to fuck with them, you could go all out and show them an August Underground movie or something from the vomit gore trilogy, which would probably mess you all up.

Right, they would probably not come around Box's place again and tell everyone else he works with he is sick, and mentally deranged or something emoticon.

Or he could end up getting blown by one of them while eating the other one's asshole. Could go either way.

Inside, Inside, Inside!

I showed it to an old girlfriend about 10 years ago (back when it was all the rage on the imdb boards - sigh) and I kid you not, she was legitimately angry at me for showing it to her. Like, didn't talk to me for 3 or 4 days angry. Give that one a shot. And since they work with you, they kinda have to talk to you the next day.

Thatโ€™s a movie I can only watch once!!

Iโ€™m interested to see what else there is out there thatโ€™ll freak me out like that one did!

Shouldnโ€™t be too hard though, I get squeamish very easily!
