Rating movies after all these years I would expect it would be easier for me but still I find it hard to put a number on my appreciation. Also like I said before the 1 to 5 system with no room for half points does not go well with me.
I did some adding myself last year which was fun for a while but at one point I realized I was doing what has been done before on other movie sites which I actually use for movie info. So sorry to say I don't use TE for the movie db but merely for discussions and the occasional challenges.

I would rate more, but I tend to rate only on my level of enjoyment I get from a movie. I'm someone that if I don't like a movie, no matter how "good" that movie is supposed to be, I tend to give it a really low rating. i have always felt that if I don't like it a movie, that means it isn't good. I've had many discussions with Messiah about this.

I'm trying to learn more about what to base my ratings of a movie on. Seems that a lot of people don't like when people rate solely on entertainment value. Like I said, I'm trying to learn more about what qualities to base my rating on. Once I get the hang of being more discerning, I'll start rating more.

Rate it on your entertainment value then. As long as you're expressing an opinion about it, it helps fine tune these lists. I don't care how bad some movies are. I'll still give a 5/5 to Bloodsucking Freaks, Blood Freak, Troll 2, Humanoids from the Deep, Things, and plenty more b-movies because they're wonderful, fun experiences. Some of these movies have legitimately changed my life, and made me a happier man.

The point I'm trying to make here is that if we don't rate it on entertainment value, we're doing it wrong.

I'm with Box on this, if I rate movies I base it mostly on the level of enjoyment I got from the experience. Mother! (2017) might be a good movie in the pretty original way the story was told or sending out a message in a symbolical way. Of course those who are totally not known with the events in the Bible are probably lost. However as the movie went along I felt myself bored and annoyed. Also it's not the kind of horror I like. So I rate such a film 2/10 no matter the raving reviews. It's the kind of movie that gets me depressed. Ok that was maybe the movie's intention but of course there are people who think there is some kind of deeper message in it. Maybe I'm too naive, lazy or uninterested to see that but don't care.
Blood Feast 2 is in no way a masterpiece but it is so incredibly entertaining to me in the sense that I have seen it multiple times in the last 3 years and I still get so happy and entertained by it. Right there is nothing wrong with a horror movie making me happy. There is various others having that effect on me: Dolls (1987) got from 7/10 to eventually perfect score. And when we talk about some kind of deeper meaning/message as weird as it sounds: Cannibal Holocaust. The haters don't see past the gore and especially the animal cruelty bothers them and thus they think it's a cheap way of filmmaking. But as that nasty film crew got in the end what they deserved it tastes sweet. I especially like when the evil doers have to go through the same they have done to another. I spit on your grave tastes sweet for example. Eden Lake on the other hand feels sour. That was the director's intention but it doesn't mean I have to enjoy it, besides there is plenty of events in that movie that made me rolling my eyes during the viewing experience. Martyrs is another one, there is torture but no revenge and for the torture for the most idiotic reason ever. Of course many fans think it is something deep, I don't buy it. In the end there isn't given an answer to the question they want to see answered.

And if people don't like how you rate movies that's their problem. Usually it's a matter of taste, it's useless trying to argue about that. Besides what fun is if we all liked and disliked the same stuff. What use is it to start crusades against people who dislike your favorite movie(s). It just tells me those people have too much time on their hands and repeating the same things (Lep style remember) over and over again resulting mostly in exactly the opposite. Thx to Lep's dozens of praising BWP topics I dislike Blair Witch Project even more than I did before.

I'm totally with you on that. I don't understand, if you don't enjoy a movie, then how is it good? Because it meets the technical standards that somebody else decided was the proper way a movie should look? I don't give a shit about any of that stuff, I'm watching for my own personal enjoyment.

I have been in many heated debates about movies because of this. I'm sorry, but if a movie fails to entertain me, I don't think I'm capable of giving it anything other than a really low score.

I always rate one what I personally think of a movie. I don't give a rat's ass what the critics or other people think, or what a movie's acceptable rating range is. I gave "Return of the Jedi" a 6, when it's acceptable range is between 7 and 9 (as opposed to 7 of 9).
"Big Trouble in Little China" I gave a 10, and it's acceptable rating range is between 6 and 8.

Acceptable range is nonsense. Big Trouble in Little China deserves is a perfect rating, because it's a perfect movie.

On an unrelated note a suggestion i have, i would like to ask you if there's a chance to increase front page's posts number? If you exclude the stickies that are always in front, the remaining number of new posts that are shown in the first page is very limited and chances are not many people will browse through page number 2,3 etc.

I would love to. However, it is such a chore to do so. I wouldn't have the energy to rate everything manuelly here, maybe if there was the half star system I would. I have 4,000 ratings on IMDb and I imported those ratings to Letterboxd, Criticker and IcheckMovies. I like the database you have created here.

I love posting threads here and talking with you all which you can't really do elsewhere but I don't use it to rate stuff.

personally i love it. it can get quite addictive adding movies, and by doing so you get more knowledge of cast n crew etc, then you can add them to the 'people' database and link it all up. plus the tags are great for mini lists, if you're in the mood for, i dunno, a 'cannibal alcohol dog' flick you can see whats out there.

rating is fun too, i am learning a little of some TE folks tastes and can use that to tailor stuff to my own, or even to contrast and challenge myself with a film i have prejudice against that others enjoyed. my own ratings are based almost entirely on my view of the movie, but can usually go a point either way. sometimes i change on a re-view or even mere contemplation: recently i've seen both Killing of a Sacred Deer & Brawl in Cell Block 99, the former i bumped from 7 to 8 and the latter im about to bump from 8 to 9 (imdb ratings)

have to admit i err on the side of adding stuff i like, and not adding any shitty romcom i may have been forced to endure. ah well, that aint gonna change. oh and the lists are really cool too, top/bottom 100 and of year etc. maybe a challenge could be to watch 50 top or bottom TE movies in a month... maybe not fiddy, bit high, no set limit perhaps better. anyway im merrily rambling the fuck away here, best sto

I rate based upon enjoyment. 2001 is boring as crap to me so it gets a low rating.
