List some of your favorite witch movies. I'm not talking sexy CW witches, like "Charmed" or some other bullshit. I'm talking real witches. I feel there aren't a whole lot of movies about witches themselves. None that are good, anyway. If it's a witch movie, the witch is usually barely in it, like Suspiria, and Rosemary's Baby.
Movies with witchcraft, or witches, or the like:
Sleepy Hollow (1999) - A supernatural Buton/Depp tale, back when they were making cool movies. There's a witch in the woods who makes a spell with some dead bird and whatnot. Good, atmospheric movie.
Suspiria (1977) - A ballet school, that just so happens to be operated by a creepy coven.
Carrie (1976) - For the longest time, I never thought of this as a witch movie, but Carrie White is totally a witch. Probably my favorite witch movie ever. LOVE IT.
Does this mean that Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood (1988) is also a witch movie? Gotta love Kane Hodder's first go, pitting him against the telekinetic Lar Park Lincoln.
Witchfinder General (1968) - Vincent Price is accusing women of being witches. One of his best, most sadistic roles.
The Blair Witch Project (1999) - A subtle found footage tale investigating the legend of the Blair Witch, in the Maryland woods. The minimalistic approach works very well.
The Witches of Eastwick (1987) - I know I said no cheesy non-horrific witches, but this one is still pretty decent. You have Jack Nicholson playing the fucking DEVIL, and three newfound witches going against him.
Night of Dark Shadows (1971) - This, along with any other Angelique-based Dark Shadows storyline. This one features an alternate reality in which Angelique was hanged and wants (a version of) Quentin Collins. For all intents and purposes, watch the 1795 storyline of the show for the best rendition of Angelique Bouchard.
Season of the Witch (1973) - George Romero's bored housewife drama, in which she eventually turns to witchcraft. Pretty decent, though perhaps a little slow compared to his other epics.
Rosemary's Baby (1968) - Roman Polanski's pregnant housewife slow burner in which Mia Farrow grows paranoid that a coven of witches may be after her unborn baby.
Black Sunday (1960) - This Mario Bava flick had an evil, ugly(hot) witch that gives you some classic horror imagery.
Haxan: Witchcraft Through the Ages (1922) - This is kind of a hard one to explain. It just goes through a bunch of witchcraft-related scenarios and acts them out. Interesting to see how people's ideas have changed over the years...
And lastly, probably the most iconic witch movie... The Wizard of Oz (1939), in which Dorothy has to defeat the wicked witch of the west, who for some damn reason is highly allergic to water. Futurama had a great parody episode exploiting the stupidity of that, but otherwise, it's still a timeless classic.
I want to see The Witch Who Came from the Sea (1976) and Mark of the Devil (1970). Those sound interesting.
Witches, man... I guess you can count Henrietta from Evil Dead 2 as a witch, in more of an ugly hag kinda way. Army of Darkness had a few "she-bitches" too.
