Everyone turns to stupid apps these days, but websites can do most anything. I guess with apps, it's all pretty much laid out, whereas websites have different browsers and whatnot that can affect functionality, ie obsolete/deprecated features.

Blah blah. I think the internet can be a great resource for ANYTHING. I never went to college because I have the internet at my hands. I have no need to let those brainwashing establishments turn ME into a liberal idiot. I can just go online and search for something, and find out how to do it. I built this ENTIRE site by looking shit up online, for example. No small feat, but a gradual work in progress.

I think websites can feature all sorts of great communities, but as I've found recently, message board communities are dying, in favor of single-domain based conglomerates, like facebook and reddit. Where have all the good sites gone? If you had a website, what would you want it to be?

And a great job you have done/been doing!
I guess for various reasons. I have noticed this on places like facebook for example which can pretty much be compared to an app. They allow for quick reactions. Some (most?) peope don't really go online for long discussions any more, and yes they are too lazy to read longer posts rather react on a topic which allows for a quick answer like who u prefer Jason or Michael? Deep discussions on a facebook group, I tried but little luck. And it's also much about the same old or new stuff.
Also I notice some people not having a laptop/pc any more and doing everything on their mobile device such as iphone, smartphone, tablet etc. I really don't understand how people find that handy. Yeah I think it's easy to have a totally up to date GPS, weather forecast, train delays and that kind of things. But do I really need all the fb like apps or silly point and click games when I'm not behind my computer, nope. I don't have the urge to be 'social' in virtual life but asocial towards the environment wherever I am.
It's good however to have people who still care and I believe you are far from the only one but the closure of the imdb boards surely has caused people ending up in different places or deciding not to start all over again.

I just find myself so bored without the imdb boards to lurk. I guess in other words, this means I should go outside and get a life, but I've gotten very good at not having a life, and making the switch would probably confuse me to no end.

And what will you find in real life? A lot of people busy with their way too big phones on the sites you detest. Not sure if they have much more of a life than you have. At least boards and sites like these people can gain something useful instead of becoming one liner posters or just press a like button and that's it. Yes very productive, social and useful to the rest of the world emoticon

I visit websites all the time. I just prefer to do so on my Iphone. It's more powerful than some ordinary computer, and the games are far more than just point or click. So even though I have a new laptop that I love, I'll always prefer using the browser on my phone to look at websites. Btw, TE works great on my Iphone.

I hate apps. People are obsessed with them, but I've never seen the appeal in most. I feel like I always have to uninstall them after a while too, either because they get carried away with ads or they simply quit working on my phone, always after an update. Sites sometimes get carried away with ads, but simple browser extensions can shut that shit down.

I can't imagine ever preferring an app on a phone over a browser on a computer. Facebook, Reddit, etc. have undoubtedly forced websites into shutting their doors due to a lack of popularity, but I can still usually find what I need with Bing. There's never been a time when I couldn't find something and thought, "I wonder if there's an app."

I don't know what my site would be about if I had one (Maximum Overdrive ?), but I do know one thing: I wouldn't let Facebook be a part of it and give people a "convenient" alternative to what the site itself offers.

I am not sure if you could call them apps but firefox has quite handy add-ons. I use add-ons to block annoying pop-ups, adds, banners and the likes. I also have one which enables to download video from the internet. I find it handier to watch them not needing access to the internet for them.
Chrome seems to have plenty of add-ons too now but I'm still happy with Firefox as browser.
I won't use the Apple products. Experience with Ipod learned me their stuff only works if you use Apple software and all that converting with Itunes was such a pain in the ass. I like my Android tablet which runs a wide variety of formats. Microsoft might not always been user friendly with their Windows and office packages last decade but Apple I think is even worse definitely when it's about handling software that is not fabricated by them.

I meant "add-ons" when I said "extensions". That's just what Chrome calls them. I don't have one for downloading videos, I usually just use a site called Savedeo. What's the add-on you use called?

Apple's a pain for sure. Only product I have of theirs is an older iPod. I actually like it, holds a ton of songs, but once it dies, that's it for me and Apple. While Microsoft's definitely not perfect, I have no plans to ditch Windows anytime soon. I'm familiar with it and as you said, it works better with third-party software.

The add-on is on Firefox called "Flash and Video Download". I use Firefox ever since Internet Explorer became unreliable. Chrome would be my second choice but for the moment I'm still very happy with Firefox.

I'm the opposite. Chrome first, Firefox second. Ironically, as I type this, I'm having an issue getting Chrome to download a file. Guess I'll use Firefox for it...

Last time I used Internet Explorer was on my Windows 8 laptop, to get a download of Chrome. Microsoft Edge is an improvement over IE, but I still prefer Chrome or Firefox.

The message board is dying, that's for sure... been that way for the last decade or more. I remember when facebook was just a blip, way back in around 2002. The last 10+ years have turned a mole into a monster.
There are things you can't learn in college, and there are most certainly (sometimes intangible) things that are impossible to learn by bypassing the college scene and relying on a screen and keyboard to do the work for you, but I'll leave that for another time.

Apps are growing out of control because of mobile devices (i.e. the SCOURGE of the earth). I don't use apps and would rather look at a non-mobile site on my mobile device, but that's just me....
Facebook blows. Id' rather go completely off-grid than join that fiasco.
