Revenge!!

Aug '15
I'm watching Death Sentence with Kevin Bacon, so I'm in the mood. Revenge films are always captivating because you get to see the bad guys getting what they deserve, and you don't feel guilty about it.

What are your favorite revenge films?

I'll start us off with my faves:

- Death Wish (1974)
- I Spit on Your Grave (1978)
- Mad Max (1979)
- Commando (1985)
- The Crow (1994)
- The Punisher (2004)
- John Wick (2014)
- Sabotage (2014)

Here are some more films with 'revenge' as a prominent theme/motive:

I'm quite fond of revenge movies myself. I think Oldboy would have to be the greatest revenge movie I've ever seen, but I also really love I Saw the Devil.

I saw the remake of Old Boy, which was pretty fucking lame, IMO. I'm sure the original is better. I never saw I Saw the Devil though, but I just may have to check it out. I see it's got Byung-hun Lee, who played the T-1000 in the latest Terminator film, in which he did good in, but his role was criminally short-lived in that.

I just finished I Saw the Devil and it was a damn brutal film. The antagonist in it was such a scumbag, and the protagonist was such a bad-ass in how he kept owning him, but damn, it's fucked up! Sometimes, the bad guys don't get the abuse they deserve for their crimes, but this is just ongoing punishment. Very unique take on the revenge film too.

Full Contact (1992) would be in my top 5 movies of any genre. Probably top 2. Sadly it's not very well-known coz everyone seems to have forgotten that Hong Kong once made the most badass action movies the world has ever seen. But if you're in the mood for Chow Yun Fat taking awesome revenge on a double-crossing flamboyantly gay arms dealer and a slut named Virgin who masturbates at inopportune moments, then check it out. Just beware of cut versions.

Loved Full Contact. Mind you, Ringo Lanm & Chow Yun Fat are a bit of a dream team when it comes to movies.

Moffat is back!

I definitely would love to see Fred Williamson team up with William Lustig. They're both total bad-asses. It's a rather uncommon film though, but I'm always on the lookout.

I have been a fan of Mad Max since I was a little shit in th 80's and the sense of dread creeped me out. 10/10 So my vote goes for Mad Max but all the others are worth talking about.

Death Wish
is great and all of it's sequels. (I just watched 4 recently) I just found out there is a 5.

I love the Punisher character but I never liked either Punisher (89) or (04) contrary to fans, I think War Zone is the best punisher movie because of the dark humor. The Purge Anarchy is really a Punisher story, if you spray painted a skull on the lead guy's chest, it would have worked as an unofficial Punisher story.

Commando
is epic and I have seen this maybe 100 times. It is a fav Arnold movie.
Sabotage is a good Arnold movie but is too fresh to vote for.
Conan is also a good revenge move "Grrrant Me, Revenge!!"

I have never been a fan of I spit on Your Grave or The Crow and I haven't seen John Wick.

Worth Mentions

Payback
Unforgiven

Hell yeah, dude. I know exactly what you mean about the "dread" of Mad Max, and it's actually kind of haunted me ever since seeing it as a kid, in a way similar to The Terminator's future war scenes. It's very eerie in that sense.

Death Wish are all solid, cuz Charles Bronson is a total bad-ass. Almost as bad-ass as Clint Eastwood! All the movies are highly entertaining, and Part 5 is surprisingly decent too. Michael Parks plays the bad guy, and he's awesome in it.

I happen to LOVE the 2004 Punisher film. Tom Jane was my favorite Frank Castle, though I wasn't crazy about War Zone. If Frank Grillo wasn't already in the Marvel-verse as Cross Bones, he would've been THE perfect choice for a new punisher, but I figure Jon Bernthal will do alright.

You should check out John Wick for sure. One of the best recent action movies.
