What the fuck was that? I guess the director got really full of himself after a few people thought Donnie Darko was "hip" and "cerebral", so what does he do? He turns his artsy-fartsy high-concept sci-fi shtick to 11 with this bizarre soap opera. And guess what? I don't get it.

Lots of people in this movie though. How did he convince everybody to join this POS?

Honestly, it's not unwatchable. It's even slightly amusing at times, but it's still too complicated and weird me to consider it a good movie.

Dude, he just came off Donnie Darko. He was like the hottest director at the time. 2001-2? Then he came out with this steaming POS and it all went down the drain! It's so fn bad I consider it classic!

I absolutely love this movie. One of my favorite science fiction films of the last 25 years.

You might have to explain that one to me. There's so much going on in this movie.

I mean I am sure there is some nuance going on that is over my head I can't explain but the basic concept and plot is pretty straight up. Obviously a dystopian future and the machines they are making for energy opened up a whole in the space time continuum. So the Rock and one of the Sean Willam Scott characters are from another time or universe. It is definitely satire on some sort of government politics and what not. I don't think any of that stuff really matters for me though. I love the style and the insanity of it all. Great look and soundtrack too. They made prequel graphic novel as well that I own.

I actually saw it at the theater with a friend the weekend it came out. We both loved it even though we maybe didn't fully grasp it all. I hate that it basically ended Kelly's career as I would love to see more from him. He did The Box which was ok but not really enough to be a full blown movie as opposed to the TV episode it originally was.

I'm not sure but I think The Box was his highest grossing film at the box office. It did seem like an hour and a half Twilight Zone ep. Unlike Darko and Southland Tales I'd never rewatch The Box.

I'll admit, I own it on DVD and have probably watched it 8-10x! It's a fun watch IMO cause it's so ridiculous. I think Kelly intended it this way but few people got it. Production wise it's top notch with a great ensemble cast and solid soundtrack IMO. Some of the dialogue is so fn cringy!
