Social media originated from message boards, but it's changed a lot over time. That includes markup and the way people format stuff. I'm considering ways to catch up to modern expectations, particularly regarding links, urls, images, and videos.

What I'm hoping to do is make it so when you type a link, it auto-converts to a link. If you post an image (file that ends with .gif, .jpg, .png, .webp), it auto-converts to an image. If you post a youtube link, it auto-converts to a youtube embed. No more '[' and ']' url/link tag nonsense.

This is for a couple reasons: 1.) some of you dumbasses couldn't/wouldn't do it right, and 2.) the new way is a faster and easier way, theoretically. And to clarify what will be considered a link, it will be any text that begins with "https://" followed by any character that isn't a space or white space. It would be more similar to how links work in the shoutbox.

This change would require me to change markup in all posts and comments, and there's a lot of room for error, so I don't know when/if this will happen. I might also remove some "emoticons" since emojis are already integrated, but I know I need to keep all the dirty ones, that's for damn sure.

I'm trying to simplify things.

Noice, Im in the #1 camp

Though I have to say it never made sense
eg I want to add a link

logically I would press the link button, the URL box pops up
thus you should copy the link into that box and press the +(add) button
but thats not how it works

i.e. what the fuck does the URL box do? (the one that saiz http://a.b/c.txt in it) I still don't know

The link one is for a hyperlink with customizable inner text (ie links that say "click here"). The url one is for a hyperlink where the inner text is the same as the url.

News on this ordeal...

It's looking promising. Many times when I've been limited in what I can code on here, I would wait some time and it would eventually become an integrated feature. Things seem to have gotten easier with these WYSIWYG editors, so I'm hoping to get this done in increments.

Over the next few days (or weeks if I get distracted/lazy), you may notice markup fuckups here and there. Stuff like links not being clickable in posts, and eventually, images being rendered only as a URL. Do not fret as this will be part of the parsing process. I have to manually edit a few thousand posts and comments, so bear with me on that.

I've commenced with a lot of markup link changes. This is going to be some tedious shit, so I'm at least trying to knock out the more recent posts first so the inconsistencies wont be as noticeable.

This is 10 years worth of posts I have to manually edit. Why do I get myself into this shit? emoticon

why would you manually edit them, surely this can be done with a script.
eg when person updates/enters a post it just scans the text and hyperlinks anything that looks like a link i.e. http, https

Because there are a lot of fuckups, and I don't want to fuck up. emoticon I have to reformat the text in various instannces and I don't want to accidentally delete anything since I'm so spaced out. I go in autopilot mode, and I'm automating it as much as I can, so it's not the worst thing in the world. What year is it?
