I saw this the other day and I've been thinking about it. It's an A24 wrestling biopic set in early 80s Dallas about a family of brothers who wrestle under their father's strict and domineering guidance. Dad is played by Holt McCallany (Fight Club, Mindhunter), and he's a real piece of work. At times, he seems like a good dad, but he pushes his wrestling ambitions onto his sons too much. He doesn't do the best job fathering his children, as you'll see here in various scenes of him being a cold, greedy prick. A good performance by Holt, though.

Headlines dictate the real star here is Efron. He plays the "primary" brother in this story, which I wont spoil here, but it's sad as hell. I went in blind and I'm not a wrestling fan, but it's got to be a good movie to reel you in when you don't find the subject matter interesting. Like how I don't give a fuck about the stock market, but The Wolf of Wall Street is still a great movie. Efron puts in a heartfelt performance here, and he beefed up more than ever for it.

I love the vibe of period-piece biopics like this. I guess A24 likes to keep things classy, so I regret to inform all of you that The Iron Claw is not a trash epic. It is just a good regular movie. emoticon

Random notes:

* I was quite amused by the Ric Flair scenes.

* Lily James is the love interest, notable for Pam & Tommy. I almost didn't recognize her.

* The vertical suplex Efron takes outside the ring and on the hard concrete floor really got me. emoticon

I know the real story so I'm wouldn't be going in blind... Between remembering as a kid and catching a doc here and there. You're such a an Efron simp Box! Honestly, this and Godzilla Minus One are the only films I really want to see from the end of this year.

It's not my fault that Efron is such an amazing human being.

Even with Kurt and Wyatt Russell, I still don't care to see any Godzilla movie. Maybe I'd watch some of the pre-CGI ones, but I would have to be baked out of my gourd. I wanted to see Silent Night, but my theater never got it, despite advertising it.

Dude. I'm not a big Godzilla fan but it was part of my childhood so there's nostalgia bait involved. That being said...a lot of Independent critics that I actually pay attention to say it's easily the best film of the year. I cant ignore that. Those Universal? Godzilla films they've but putting out the past few years have been confirmed utter rubbish and I concur.

He destroys Boston, in one of the recent films! Well, not just Godzilla, it's him plus several of his famous fellow mega-monsters. Anyway, yah, I considered that an honor, to see places I have been to being totally leveled by Godzilla.

While, from what I've heard, from real world friends and critics alike is that it's a great monster film and it has a great story surrounding it. There's a great hero's journey with a story arc... something Hollywood has forgotten how to do. Pumpkinhead dude, Pumpkinhead...notice the great character arc?!

Finally watched this earlier. Good stuff. And pretty sad. I guess that was a pretty accurate portrayal of a tough-as-nails, old school wrestling promoter/retired wrestler in Fritz. It feels like both he and the mom could have possibly prevented their sons from getting depressed enough to suicide themselves simply by listening to them once in a while and being more supportive.

From what I understand, there was another brother who killed himself that they left out of the movie, while having his presence combined with the first one who killed himself.

And what the fuck is up with Ric Flair in this movie? That was like some lame portrayal of him on Mad TV, or something, where you know the guy has never actually seen him before, and is just working with what he was told to do earlier that day. emoticon

I thought the Ric Flair part was pretty great. He gave him the claw all right!

The extra brother bit is very weird. I guess they didn't want to overstuff the movie with that complicated subplot, and it's probably for the best. So many brothers dying gets kind of redundant after a certain point, and that limit is four. Four brothers. Five is simply too many, so sorry Chris. You never existed.
