I've mostly seen the mainstream stuff, so I'm no connoisseur.

Faves: The Flash (shut up, Vince!), and perhaps a flick I saw a few days ago, Charlie Day's Fool's Paradise, a satire on Hollywood. Plenty of okay movies this year, but nothing really great. Amityville Death Toilet was a good piece of garbage, though.

Worst: Evil Dead Rise, Blue Beetle, The Boogeyman, Knock at the Cabin.

...and for TV...

Poker Face was pretty good, and I enjoyed Gen V. FUBAR wasn't as good as I wanted it to be, and I ejected from The Last of Us early on. Fuck that show.

So what are your favorites of 2023?

Box, you like what you like. The fact that you think a POS like The Flash was your favorite film of the year says a lot about the state of cinema. I'm not gonna even attempt to make a top 5 let alone 10 of the year, like I do every year...this year was the worst since 2020 IMO maybe the worst ever. 2022 at least had some gems mixed in there. My brain hurts, struggling just thinking about picking 5 good films for a best of list.

Such a cynic. emoticon But yeah, not a lot of standouts, so I can't say it was a great year by any means. I almost wanted to add Indy 5, which tells you that a Disney movie being on my top movies of the year list means that all hell has broken loose, and I wont allow that. emoticon

Eh, it was a weak year for all genres IMO. There were some big hit films like Barbie, Super Mario Bros, Oppenheimer and I'm sure they're good but I honestly have little to no interest in them. Horror output was miniscule. I really want to see Godzilla Minus One. Superhero films are dead...the only one I have even an inclination to see might be Guardians 3.

Best: I guess John Wick 4. Due to being almost three hours long though, it's going to be a while before I feel like watching it again. Like you said, plenty of okay movies.

Worst: Haunting of the Queen Mary and Pet Sematary: Bloodlines.

TV: The new seasons of Beavis and Butt-Head and Creepshow were decent and I liked Twisted Metal more than expected.

I totally forgot about Twisted Metal, even though it's been making headlines recently for its season 2 renewal (even though we already knew it was getting renewed). A generally fun show.

So Dylan's New Nightmare was bad, huh? I guess it doesn't surprise me that a fan-film sucks. I just don't know why they always tend to suck. Doesn't any fan know how to make a good movie?

There's gotta be some fan films that are ok, and in some cases, better than the actual installments of the series. This shit wasn't THAT much worse than New Nightmare, but I really hate New Nightmare.

Anybody got some good horror recs for 2023. There were a few decent watchable films but no standouts imo. Been told Malum and Suitable Flesh are worth seeking out.

I'll disagree with Scream 6 being bad and Spider-Verse being great (that inconclusive movie really pisses me off). And Ant-Man 3 definitely sucked.

So Beau is Afraid was good? Hadn't heard anything about it, and my interest was slightly there, but I sure as hell wasn't going to sit in a movie theater for 4 hours! I wouldn't even do that for Scorsese!

Well Scream 6 probably sits more in the meh category. There weren't any movies I outright hated.

I'll agree with your point about Spider-Man, my eldest had the same reaction to the ending but is still better than most of the other Marvel movies and animations put out this year.

I liked Beau more after I thought about it. It's probably even better on a second viewing.

I'll get around to Beau when it hits streaming. I hope it doesn't feel as derivative as his previous movie Midsommar (derivative of Hereditary). I can accept Scream 6 as meh, because while I personally liked it, I don't care for the killer reveals, as that twist was derivative of part 2's twist. It's hard to predict the killer when none of these characters are who they say they are (outside of the ghostface persona). It's pretty sad that the Sony Marvel movies are becoming more promising than the main MCU...

At least we can agree that Evil Dead Rise was shit! Most people seem to agree that Guardians 3 was the best Marvel in a while. I can agree, althrough I thought it was just okay. I can't be bothered with most of their stuff anymore, but for some dumbass reason, my stupid self is still holding out hope that Echo will be decent.

I had to watch the flash since its been hyped up here.
Im 10 mins in and have to stop it.

OK I get its meant to be on the humourous side, like the thor films
but why is the CGI so bad, we had obvious CGI car chase (why couldnt they film this real)
but the babies, My eyes those were bad CGI babies for 1999 let alone 2023.
No idea why they made them look like bad cgi, perhaps they were worried viewers would be too upset seeing babies falling out of a building? If thats the case then why put the scene in the fuckin film, FFS

All this bitching about the CGI, which actually did not bother me AT ALL. I'm used to any superhero movie having bogus CGI scenes, and nothing about it seemed particularly worse to me than any other superhero flick. Besides, the director tries to justify it as a stylistic choice.

I mean... 10 minutes? I goddamn guarantee we've all watched things infinitely worse than the first 10 minutes of The Flash. I think this movie has some kind of curse on it where everyone wants to jump on the hate bandwagon. Before the Ezra controversy, early reactions compared it to The Dark Knight quality, and Stephen King gave it a glowing review. Now, it's the cool thing to do to hate on movie bold enough to bring back the greatest Bruce Wayne ever: George Clooney.

I actually watched it to the end something I can't say for Blue Beatle or Shazam 2 but compared to The Dark Knight?! Stephen King's opinion on a film?! That was pure shilling to sell that POS...and the CGI was distracting bs.

Yeah, shilling for sure, but people still respect Stephen King's opinion on stuff. I don't, but enough people do for it to make headlines. Blue Beetle and Shazam 2 are definitely worse movies. Generic and forgettable.

Stephen King's been an unhinged idiot for over 20 years now. Sure he's written some great stuff especially in his younger days but you give a shit about him rec'ing an opinion on a film he probably had points on?! I understand your love for The Flash due to nostalgia reasons of growing up in the 90s with all the good animated stuff they put out then but it's a bad film IMO. Ezra Miller is hard to like imo but 2 of him?!. The CGI is crap the stuff in the Star Wars prequels from 20 years ago looked better which I don't understand. You need to find a better fav film of 2023 or I won't stop...lol... remember I'm unrelentless...and the film is a blatant rip off of the success Spider-Man No Way Home found which they thought DC could replicate which fell flat.
