As a film buff, I wanted to collect all the classics. Cinematic achievements, good performances, groundbreaking for this or that reason. It seemed a doable task because there weren't nearly as many being released as there are today. I can't keep up with all the shit that comes out now.

I still support my local movie theater because I'm a sucker. I see movies. And while I see movies I like, will I ever see a movie that moves me? Have all the stories been told? Has technology made it too easy for people to generate this content on the fly to the point where it means nothing?

We all grew up with a slew of movies that we have an irrational sentimentality toward. Nostalgia turns these movies into your friends, always there to cheer you up. Do you think there will ever be another movie made that can land on your all-time favorites list? Or are you set in stone at this point?

You're officially a bitter old man.

A great movie that can move me? Not from a major studio, that's for sure. Independent, maybe.

What's the last movie that you actually loved?

I can tell you the last movie I loved: Brawl in Cell Block 99. Since January of 2018, I've watched it five times and given it a perfect rating every time. Then I have to go all the way back to the 1990s to find any movies I currently give a perfect rating, stuff like Goodfellas and Jurassic Park. I'd have no problem sticking those three on an all-time favorites list.

I wouldn't say there'll never be another movie made that I end up loving, but I agree with Znep, it won't be from a major studio. Probably not anyway. It won't be any superhero shit or a sequel to a hit from decades ago.

Maybe it's like you said: all the stories have been told. A new horror movie might come out that's good, but in my mind, I'm going to be comparing it to the classics. Making comparisons to the classics is inevitable and often it's thoughts of how the classics did it better.

I did enjoy The Batman, so there's that. Lately, I think we've had a great year for movies every 5 years. 2012 was great, especially for action. TDK Rises, Jack Reacher, Transit, Stolen, etc. 2017 was a mixed good (Blade Runner 2, and a few good horrors). This year could've been good if not for the strike, who knows.

In honesty as far as I'm aware these strikes won't affect film till summer 24 and if they hold out far into 2025. Everything released this year is already in the can maybe in post-production. It's only gonna affect network tv and possibly some streaming shows at the end of the year.

I rarely go to to theatre anymore . Maybe twice a year. I still get excited to see certain movies or look forward to certain directors. But I get way way behind on seeing newly released movies. Not sure anything will crack my top 10 but it's possible and I am sure something in the future will crack my top 100.

A lot of my movie time is devoted to older stuff. Especially the low budget or B movies getting released by all the smaller boutique labels like Vinegar Syndrome, Severin, Mondo Macabro, etc. I have been buying physical media probably more than I ever have in the past because of these companies.

Hmmm...should I bother?! 2019 was the last year of decent cinema IMO. Sure, been complaining about it since 2015 but I could always find some 7/10s and even an 8 or 2 every year. Since 2020 it's been rubbish imo, hard to even find a 7/10 and I admit sometimes I give it a sympathy 7/10 only cause the last 10 films I watched were a 4,5/10. A polished turd is still a fucking turd but these are the times we live in I guess?!

I'm always open to kicking certain movies off my top ten list in favor of a new/modern one. For whatever reason, most movies I see as a new favorite these days don't hold up for the rewatch, so, they're usually only on the list temporarily. I like a lot of movies from the last few years. Some I like a lot, but it's rare that I think enough of a movie that I'd even give it a 7/10. An 8, almost never. 9 or 10, definitely never. But to be fair, I think there's gotta be some nostalgia involved for me to take it that far. Maybe there are still cinematic masterpieces out there. I'm not trying to watch every single thing I can. I just know what I like and don't like from what I see. I still feel like the real quality lies within lesser known indie shit, as opposed to what you'd find at the theater. One thing I've noticed over the last decade or so is that I'm never more impressed than when I find a really good tv show. I think TV shows are where it's at now.
