I didn't want to believe the heckler at the early screenings, but he's the real hero for calling it like it is. This movie is garbage. Right away, you can tell it was more inspired by the 2013 movie than by the real series. Hell, this movie makes the 2013 movie look good, even though it suffers from the same flaws as that turkey, only they took those eye-rolling tropes and turned them up to 11. It's like they didn't learn anything from that movie.

I mentioned in another post about remakes failing so hard that they have to go back to the original to recalibrate. Ash vs. Evil Dead was the perfect recalibration, going back to the right tone, but here, we lose all of that. Here, we aim for straight horror again, and we fail hard. Again.

I'm assuming this movie is set in Michigan due to the inclusion of another cabin in the woods as well as our main location, that of a delinquent high-rise apartment. Wiki says Los Angeles, but I'll debate that. The aesthetic is grim, and by that I mean it's so dark, it's hard to see anything. Our characters are completely forgettable and our deadites are again inspired too much by that J-horror jump scare bullshit. If this is the future of the Evil Dead franchise, I'm out.

What a fucking disappointment. Also, there's a whole parking garage they could have put the oldsmobile in, but nope. I guess Sam Raimi, despite producing this mess, didn't want to include his trademark in a subpar product. Gory? Yes. Fun and scary? No and no. They need to stop giving these movies such big budgets, because that shit ruins the magic. Fuck this movie.

I bet you wouldn't be nearly as hard on it if it wasn't called Evil Dead.

The opening title card was pretty fucking awesome. The rest of the movie I did like, but I don't think it quite lived up to the opening. And I had no problem seeing anything that was going on.

The kids were kind of headscratchers for me though. The youngest daughter was cool. But the middle one, the short haired activist, was kind of a bitch. I'm not sure if the movie was promoting her lifestyle or making fun of it. It did kind of seem to be a joke when she said "that's culturally insensitive!" But then you have the "son." At first I thought it was funny that the girl looked more like a boy, and the boy looked more like a girl. But after a little while, I realized that boy IS a girl. I looked it up afterwards, and sure enough Danny was played by a trans person. But the movie never makes any reference to this. Was the character supposed to be a real boy or a transboy?

Not triggered, just commenting on some things I find odd/funny about the movie.

If that was all in a movie made 10 years ago, I wouldn't even have noticed, but it's kind of hard not to now with the whole modern trans movement being as big as it is.

I'm all for people having the freedom to do what they want. If a person feels more comfortable dressing and acting like the opposite gender, good for them. Where I have a problem is that now it is demanded that everybody else must see them how they see themselves. If you don't play along, you're piece of shit. It's somehow even considered controversial to see a problem with allowing easily-influenced minors to take cross-sex hormones and have irreversable surgeries sterilizing them for life. If you don't see a problem with that, you're insane.

The movie didn't seem to be trying to push a message one way or the other on the issue, so it's fine. I'm not mad at the filmmakers, but just the inclusion of transness nowadays has me rolling my eyes, like here we go again. Like I don't see enough every where else I look.

I wouldn't call any of those examples true trans. Norman Bates had dissociative identity disorder, Angela was forced into it by his crazy aunt, and Glen or Glenda was about a crossdresser.

Hide and Go Shriek and Fatal Games are pretty decent trans slashers though.

Transvestism and crossdressing are the same thing. But I'm talking about transgenders here. A transvestite is a man who acknowledges that he's a man, but just likes to wear women's clothes from time to time. A transgender believes that they actually are in fact the opposite sex, and are trapped in the wrong body.
