I just recently watched Bad Moon (1996). Despite the inclusion of name actors Mariel Hemingway and Michael Parรฉ, the true star of the film is Thor, the German Shepherd. His undying devotion to protecting his beloved family is what really made me emotionally involved.

Sleepwalkers (1992) had Clovis the cat. Where the human characters were practically useless, Clovis spent the whole movie kicking ass.

I'm sure there are plenty more I could list that aren't immediately coming to mind. Which are your favorites?

Any scene from any movie with Harry Dean Stanton is one of my favorites, but that's near the top of the list!

I love how the cat's eyes track to the alien after he dispatches Brett... kind of like he's in awe of a supreme predator. And later on the alien peeps in at Jones in the carrier and doesn't do away with him (possibly because he doesn't consider him a threat, or because he recognizes him as a stellar CAT!) Literally .... a stellar cat.

I like your interpretation - and believe it or not it's never occured to me before even though I have existed wuith cats almost all of my adult life. I'll be thinking about it next time I watch.

When I first saw Alien I was convinced that Jonesy had somehow been impregnated by the alien and that was why he didn't bother with him.

You know I can understand why you gravitated towards Jones harboring the alien... you were about 2 films too early. emoticon

Well ok a family horror movie but Binx from Hocus Pocus.

In dark animation I know of a few more examples:
the mice from The Rescuers, the Great Mouse Detective and Secret of Nimh
the cat from Coraline

Dickie, the blind girl's seeing eye dog in The Beyond. Sure, he bites her throat out, but his name is fucking Dickie, so...he rules.

Well, Scooby-Doo, of course.

I'm not a huge fan of this movie - it's fun and i like it - but for some reason whenever this question comes up Nanook from The Lost Boys always springs to mind:

Of course, there's also the dogs in The Thing - victims, heroes, things, love 'em all:

I was gonna say Nanook, you bastard! He was a great protector, he saved the day... at least twice, right? Possibly three times?

But, back to calling you a bastard. Please turn the volume on your computer up as high as it will go, and listen very, very carefully to what Lynda Day George says here, from :12 to :22:

Yeah, Nanook was definitely a hero again and again. Awesome dog.

Look at these, some of these are incredible. Someone made a blog post that asks the question "what types of things would dogs select to be monsters, if they were making a horror movie?" I like numbers 9 and 10 the best.

#11 & 12 are awesomely funny.

I won a 3 foot tall plush Mickey Mouse in a trivia contest once and I discovered that one of my cats would cower in fear if I moved Mickey's arms around and did an imitation of Mickey's voice. I made the mistake of showing my sister this one time when she was visiting - this is the older sis who used to hold me down and tickle me until I puked. Anyway, I left her, the cat & Mickey alone for about five minutes and the next thing I knew that cat was climbing up my body and on to my head to get away from Mickey. I had claw marks the length of my body from being climbed like a tree. Mickey got donated after that.

Next to the grandfather, Nanook's the least annoying character on The Lost Boys.

Although I might put Nanook slightly ahead of grandad both are so much more likeable than everyone else.

Bad Moon is cool as hell. That dog was a real hero. Michael Pare is bad-ass.

Otherwise, I can only really think of the monkey(s) from Every Which Way but Loose / Any Which Way You Can.
Right turn, Clyde.
