As we approach the midway point I wanted to alert everyone that I've been monkeying around with the Kong Bonus by adding more films to watch and there are now two 50 point Kong bonuses possible. See Progress Thread for complete details.

Now, here's how the apes stand so far:
beatnik - 2615 points puts me in Caesar's spot but even Caesar had his downfall - beware the Ides of Smerd!
Box_A_Hair - 1808 points & first & only to complete the live POTA show so far.
Smerd - 1783 points - Smerdy is reading his way to the top.
JohanWoW - 1311 points sees Johan sampling both universes with a smattering of sexplo.
India - 1303 points - taking a classical approach with only one post 60's film so far.
peeptoad - 1273 points - give peeps a couple more Scooby Snacks and she could win this thing.
Foz - 1180 points - deserves a bonus for including one of my favorite docos, The King of Kong.
Troma - 648 points with complete disloyalty to Pota & Kong!
Ballz - 633 points with complete loyalty to POTA!
Gymnopedie - 91 points & lost in Boggy Creek...

EDIT: More monkey business - these guys posted too late to be included in the recap but here's their scores so far:
sethyeah - a whopping 1732 points jumps him to 4th place.
BarkingBaphomat - 651 points from six films.
NoseOfNicko - 253 points catapults him to second place.... from the last.

Now, get up and fight like apes!

Even as a kid I thought, "Hmmm, is this a rip-off?" But I never missed an issue.

Wow I missed this thread. Well I am actually through the ape movies I wanted to watch bar giving Tarzan the Ape Man with Bo Derek a revisit. So don't expect me to get a high end position. Tarzana was just a lucky one because it had a chimp in it. I'm focusing on another challenge now but want to thank you for the opportunity to check out the POTA and Kong movies something I probably would not have without this challenge. They are not really my type of movies in the end. Still it was fun emoticon

I'm glad you participated Johan. Maybe you'll spot another monkey or two in your other challenge films!

Woah, thanks for the recap beatnik!
I don't think there's any way I can take this thing with all of my worldly distractions (cough, cough, joking). However I am finishing up the Lemon grove Kids right now and I aim to watch the final film in the Apes saga later, so we'll see!
You guys are kicking ass and taking names later with the comic books and other literatures, though!

Do I sense a little cough whenever it's 4:20? emoticon

Smerd may be the first person I've met (even if it's just on-line) who is actually a bigger and certainly more knowledgable POTA fan than I am. I've really enjoyed seeing other people get Ape fever during this challenge.

Glad you're doing it peeps!

You guys are all more knowledgeable about this stuff than I am ... I spend too much time pondering humanity's dire fate to be up to snuff on the "other primates". emoticon

Here's a random thought by me and @der...

The first Planet of the Apes movie is Charleton Heston's movie, but it's Roddy McDowall's series! Much in the way that Tremors is Kevin Bacon's movie, but the movie belongs to Michael Gross!

McDowall was great in those movies. He's the real star. I also really like Zira, and I'm sad she's only in three of the films.

Also, that poster in the original post is fantastic. I'd frame that on my wall.

Good point. You're right, it did become Roddy's.

And both Roddy and Michael Gross starred in television versions of their franchises.

Yeah, but Michael Gross is still going at it! We're expecting a Tremors 6 soon, and yet, Kevin Bacon is also coming back for a series, but... no word on Michael Gross in that. Which would be weird...

The Tremors show was great. I'd definitely watch more of that, but they always cancel the good ones...

Really enjoyed part 5, looking forward to the 6th.

Don't know if it's true, but the new Bacon series will ignore the sequels?

The original series, I agree. I like when show versions of movies pick up where the movies left off instead of just recreating the original movie.

Roddy McDowall came to Dallas and did Charley's Aunt at a dinner theatre and being the ape fan I was I had to go. The play was hilarious. McDowall was great in it. Afterwards, my mom and I and a few other people (all my mom's age - she knew him as an actor from his child star days) waited backstage and got admitted to his dressing room for autographs. I came prepared with a photo of him as Cornelius for him to sign. He seemed thrilled that I brought that and was very happy to talk ape with this 8 or 9 year-old boy. For years afterward I thought he was one of the coolest guys on the planet - and it all started (for me anyway) when he put on the ape make-up. I naturally thought it was awesome that he continued to do the films and the series. And you're right - after the first two original films it is Roddy's show.

I'm glad you're enjoying the series so much!

I didn't realize how much I enjoyed movies with men in gorilla suits. The suits can be good or bad, but the ones leaning toward bad are more fun.

I also didn't realize until I watched King Kong Lives the importance of those actors in those suits! In fact, the actors who play King Kong and his mate are listed first in the cast list on imdb. Was the gorilla in Congo an actress in a suit (Lola Noh) or a CGI configuration? I'm just happy they didn't use a real ape.

And I watched POTA for the first time in years and was greatly impressed. King Kong (1933) is a perfect film.

Still learning!
