Maurice celebrates the Challenge of the Apes finale. And it was good! We had a grand time monkeying around and I learned a few things - like Smerd is an even bigger Ape fan than I am. It was exciting to see so many of us immerse ourselves in the Ape universe. Here's how the final results stacked up:

beatnik (moi) - 5775 points - Makes me Caesar - Long live the King!
SethYeah - 5658 points - he never delivered on the promised monkeyfucking but Seth nearly took Caesar's crown.
Smerd - 5253 points and Smerd definitely gets the Orangutan Award by reading 29 consecutive issues of Marvel's POTA comic.
India - 3074 points - India bounced all over the place gathering points here and there like a true monkey!
Box-a-Hair & sidekick @der - 3018 points - they cut a solid swath through both universes.
Foz - 2381 - and Fozzie may have been the only one of us to actually score off the Marmoset song.
peeps - 2214 points - She deserves an extra bonus for suffering through the Kong musicals.
JohanWOW - 1311 points and that was all achieved in the first two weeks.
Ballz - 1295 points - took a couple of long pauses but came back strong at the end.
barkingBaphomet - 1016 points from a varied list of movies and one classic Spidey show.
troma - 881 points without entering either universe!
NoseOfNicko - 471 points - for a late starter, nicko did alright.
Gymnopedie - 91 points from boggy Creek

Thank you all for participating. I hope everyone had as much fun monkeying around as I did. Tell me what you liked and didn't like. Did you miss FTV points? Did you like that points were based on minutes instead of movies watched? Did you like the reading bonus? Will you be back next July for .... The Animals Amuck & Disaster Flick Challenge or would you prefer something else? Do you know all the lyrics to "Dr. Zaius! Dr. Zaius!" ???

Considering I've done very few challenges, I can't complain about third.

I liked the running time points, and I liked that you incorporated books/comics.

I like the idea of the Animals Amuck and Disaster Flick Challenge, definitely enjoy both.

I thought you might pass me before the challenge ended. I always was aware of you chasing me down on horseback, net in hand, whether you actually were or not. emoticon

I was originally only going to include reading boulle's original POTA novel and you encouraged me to add more. I thought it worked great. I might consider replacing the 50 point reading bonus with a page count so each of those comics you read would have been around 75 points instead of 50. One page would equal one minute.

There's plenty of great nature amuck books like Guy N. Smith's giant crab series or Benchley's Jaws.

Someone (Johan or peeps I think) suggested before this challenge started that I should do it every July with a different theme and Animals Amuck plus disaster flicks seems like a great combo.

I almost watched more from the Kong universe, but just got burned out.

Yeah I might have not read the Ape comics otherwise, so thanks for that. Those and the Tarzan POTA and that collection of short stories is about the only thing Ape universe I haven't explored yet.

Oh yeah, and Guy has the killer bat book. And speaking of crabs, there's a newer book series called Clickers by J.F. Gonzalez, and Brian Keene has The Conqueror Worms...

That's a good idea, one off challenges, a lot of variations there.

excellent work hosting & congrats winning!

I was pleasantly suprised by the original POTA films, which i assumed wouldn't be my thing, but Escape especially was very good. Worst was either Dawn or Jacksons Kong, the former i found boring and predictable, the latter just too long. And by then i'd seen the 33 & 76 ones is quick succession, so Kong overload may have been a factor.

didn't miss FTV points, when scoring by the min they hardly affect anything. books/comic i think was great idea, tho i didnt utilise myself feel that introducing multi platform into challenges mixes it up and offers avenues to keep enthusiasm going throughout & makes it all the more fun.

nice to have these one off challenges, as mentioned get to watch stuff you may not normally consider. cheers for the ape mess beats!

One of the things I found most gratifying about this challenge was when you and some of the others starting getting into the Apes films despite no prior interest. That was cool.

I agree that Jackson's Kong is way too long. Almost every scene could be shortened. I had similar problems with his Hobbit films although I really like the longer versions of LOTR. For me the saving grace of his Kong is Serkis and Naomi Watts - both of them are awesome and when they are on screen together there is some magic.

thanks for all the feedback and for taking the Ape Challenge Foz!

Despite my half-assed participation, I enjoyed this challenge. I hadn't seen most of the Planet of the Apes franchise and this was the perfect reason to at least finally see the classic stuff.

I liked points being based on minutes rather than movies watched. It's a simple concept and there doesn't have to be a minimum time set for what counts in the challenge.

I'd participate in an animals and disasters challenge. Plenty of those I've never seen either.

As I said to Foz above, one of my biggest thrills this month was seeing people get into the Apes films who wouldn't normally watch them. I'm glad you enjoyed the challenge and liked the way it was set up. That seems to be the concensus so far so with a little fine-tuning that's the way I'll bring it back next year - probably with the animals amuck & disaster theme.

The Kong musical numbers sucked. Never again.

Congrats, beatnik! You really are King of the Apes.

Whoops, how did that get in there?
Anyway, that reminds me of King of the Monsters, which reminds me of Godzilla. And I have a bunch of Marvel Godzilla comics that i can read if anyone ever does a zilla challenge. I liked that part of the challenge, but I didn't have any ape material to read.

So that's what a banana split is. emoticon

Godzilla & pals was another theme I was considering. I was going to hold off on that one in case Japanuary happened next year. I'm not sure who was talking about doing that but it's a great name for a challenge. If it doesn't happen I may go back to doing Godzilla.

Alex Cox, the director of Sid & Nancy & (ahem) Repo Man, wrote some Godzilla comics. I'm not sure if they are the Marvel ones but they were a lot of fun.

I was enjoying the Kong animated show and that's why I added those two movies but I was sorry I did when I watched them. Too late to take them back then.

What did you think of minutes vs movies watched being the basis for points?

The minutes are cool... it's more interesting and I get to brush up on my maths as we play.
Regarding the Godzilla comics I think Dark Horse had a series too, but can't remember.
Japanuary sounds excellent. Or Godzilla. I'd partake in either one.

I hope whoever was planning to do Japanuary is reading this because I would love to see that happen too.

My favorite thing about the minutes is that it opens up the challenge to watching shorts and TV and movies regardless of the length - at any rate there's no "penalty" for watching long or short works.

Congrats on both winning and organising this challenge, it was fun at least for 2 weeks for me. A full month is too long for this kind of challenge, it's too limited for me. However it was a nice chance to finally check out the whole original POTA movies and visit/revisit some Kong movies. Overall I have not become afan of any of these movies but the original POTA is one I will certainly revisit at some point.

I liked the bonus points, I did miss the FTV points. In the challenge Im' organizing until the end of August I also do 1 punt per full minute and extra points for FTV (10 for full feature, 5 for shorts). In the end might not make that much difference but it's still an additional boost IMO.

I'm all for some kind of animal/creature challenge. there is quite a bit of movies that remained unseen during the challenge on Zed's board but all of these could also fit in the Turkey challenge. Ok I am not going to do that erotic or Something Weird challenge as I'm too busy with the general movie challenge on the Dutch moviemeter site. And my next projects on that site is a KO of horror characters from September and in October organising (of course) a true horror movie challenge which I'll combine with the likewise challenge here.

Thanks for hosting emoticon

I'm glad you participated Johan, especially since I know these films are not really your thing. You did very well for only being here for half of the challenge. It sounds like you've got a full slate of challenges coming up even without hosting the Something Weird one. I'm not doing any challenges this month but I am concentrating on getting some mini-series watched - which is part of a neverending challenge on icm so I guess i am doing another challenge afterall.

I'll consider instituting a FTV bonus for the next one. Still waiting to see what everyone says.

July 2017 was mostly about Planet of the Apes for me. I'd only ever seen Rise and Dawn, which were okay at best, but fuck it. The '68 original is considered a classic, so I might as well check it out...

Charleton Heston is the man! It was a surprisingly solid film (apparently from some shoddy source material), and I liked the whole future time-travel aspect. However, Beneath came along, and something struck a chord with me. When Brent and Taylor had to fight to death, I realized I was hooked. So then when Taylor blows up the fucking planet, I knew this series was only going to get better. Escape made me cry, and I'm not gonna lie. I thought Cornelius and Zira were wonderful characters, and with Roddy McDowall stealing the show, I had a blast with Conquest and... well... I zoned out during Battle, but fortunately, I fucking loved that live-action '74 series. The whole original series is easily one of my new favorite franchises, EVER. I even rewatched the first three movies, even though no points were involved. I might keep rewatching them, because they're so bad-ass.

I found the Kong movies were less bad-ass, but I did thoroughly enjoy a few of them. I liked them all, but they didn't blow my mind like the PotA films. I probably liked the '76 and '86 ones most, because they were kinda violent. They shot the shit out of Kong, and it was a bloody mess. They're all okay though, but I'm not crazy about Jackson's over-long 2005 Kong. Meh.

I threw in a few random ape things, like episodes of Freddy, Futurama, Darkplace, and Monkey Shines to be more diversified, but in the end... I just fucking love Planet of the Apes.

I'll add that I hated the Tim Burton film. I suppose it might've been more faithful to the novel, but if the author of said novel admits that it's not a great book... then it wont be a great movie. emoticon

I rewatched the newer PotA flicks to get bonus points, but by that time, I got the ape fever. I saw War and thought it was the best of the new batch of PotA flicks. Cool movie.

As a challenge, I did have fun with this one. A lot of fun. I hated that Apes Saturday morning cartoon, but most of it was gold. I liked the points-per-minute idea, but it doesn't work for all challenges (like the October challenge, for example). @Der shares my sentiments, and really enjoyed the Roddy McDowall PotA entries.

I'm down for Animals Amuck and Disaster flicks.

Wow, thanks for the awesome recap. You are one of the people that I made this challenge for without even knowing it. I never expected it to generate some new Apes fans but it certainly worked out that way and that's fucking cool.

I agree that minutes based challenges don't work for everything but I think it's the best way to do things if you're going to include TV eps and shorts. Glad you're onboard with that and the potential Animals Amuck and Disaster Flick Challenge for next year.

If you can get ahold of the book Planet of the Apes: Tales From the Forbidden Zone, it features 15 new short stories set in the original Apes universe. It includes mash-ups of characters from the first five movies and the two TV shows, back stories for characters like Milo and Nova, and even some alternate reality ones (what if Taylor and Nova crossed the Forbidden Zone and found their own paradise on the other side?). I think you would enjoy the Hell out of it.

You didn't do so badly for someone who didn't watch any Planet of the Apes or King Kong. emoticon

I followed your rec on Night of the Bloody Apes but I watched the original Spanish language version with no nudity - big mistake. I enjoyed it anyway and will watch the trashier American version next time.

October, turkey and dolls challenges coming soon!

I'd offer to host it but I am maxed out right now at work so that's not a good idea. I would watch a few movies or tv eps for it though. I'm always up for some sci/fi/fantasy flicks.
