A lot of the old stories about werewolves, vampires, ghosts, etc, have some kind of supernatural element, obviously. Often, the way to fight the evil monsters lies in some kind of Christian symbol, like a cross, or maybe a pre-Christian symbol that has been co-opted by Christianity, like... OK, nothings coming to mind, but I'm sure we can think of a few kajillion examples.

Anyway, in modern times, there are plenty of horror movies and franchises that have moved away from explicitly Christian ways of fighting the monsters, or they have somehow de-Christianized the Christian symbols... even in the original Fright Night, they do fight Jerry with a cross, but if you watch carefully it's more like the vampire killers have faith in themselves than in Jesus. I don't think they even mention Jesus... Peter Vincent can only fight Jerry with the cross after he has faith in HIMSELF, having succeeded in battle against Evil Ed. It's not really religious at all, it's just a weapon that only has power if you believe in yourself. I think pre-vamped out Evil Ed says to Charlie at one point "You must have total faith in it for it to work," referring to the cross... thats not exactly the same as having faith in yourself, but it's not explicitly about Jesus either.

But, of course, this is a much larger topic than Fright Night. What comes to mind, for examples of modern horror movies that are overtly Christian? I personally think that this could be a pretty disturbing trend, if it started really taking off in a big way, because it could be linked to a broader cultural shift toward a more medieval way of thinking, which, of course, we see all around us, in many ways.

Soooooo anyway, any thoughts on this?

thanx Onyx. I did a terrible job introducing the topic in my OP here, but the topic is very interesting. I am gonna come back and post more here when I have some clearer ideas about what I want to say.

here, this is an interesting article about this type of thing:
https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/why-are-so-many-horror-films-christian-propaganda

That article mentions Nigeria, as an example of a place where scary stories can radicalize people, and make them more religious in order to fight demons. I have seen a documentary about that exact topic, a few years back... it showed clips from Nigerian movies in which people fought devils with crosses, exorcisms, etc... I think there were wizards who were Christian somehow... wizards that would fight demons using Christian tools. It all looked very medieval to me.

But, if this does not exist in the US, I would be very surprised. I bet there is a large part of the population in which the kids get sent to Jesus Camps, and they watch a lot of extremely Christian horror movies at home.

Seen one Christian film that started out looking like an X-Files conspiracy type with UFO's but devolved into a preaching session where they all pretended to have been taken by the rapture just to teach a guy a lesson.

Isn't one of the 10 commandments 'Though shall not bear false witness against thy neighbour'? So in teaching this guy to be a better Christian they all go to hell.

Oh, horror movies. Little fail emote for me too emoticon

I think my favorite crucifix scene would be the one in Satanic Rites (of dracula).

In contrast to Fright Night, From Dusk till Dawn is just the opposite.
As opposed to self-faith, their only hope is for the ex-clergyman to regain his faith...in Christ.

Calvaire comes to mind.

I always think anything with Satanic elements is basically Christian. Obviously films like The Exorcist, but less obviously Rosemary's Baby or The Omen, even The Ninth Gate. Satan is a Christian figure after all.

if you google Christian wizards, not necessarily in quotes, there are some bizarre sites that come up. Here's one:
https://gnosticcross.tripod.com/archive/2001_09_2.html

As people abandon their confidence in science, and rational behavior in general, we can probably expect to see a lot more of this type of thing in the future. Jesus protect us... whoops, see, I'm susceptible too.

Seriously though, horror movies could very easily be turned into a kind of propaganda arguing for the importance of a theocratic state. Equating political power with religious conviction, and the ability to fight evil... that sort of thing... in such a world, "christian wizards" could see themselves as being kind of like Jedi knights, fighting the forces of darkness... they wouldn't necessarily have to be right wing, although that's how it tends to be today.

I could absolutely see that happening... someone in the next generation of Pat Robertsons, starting a production company for making horror movies designed to make people more Christian, and then working with a more Christian federal government (say, if Mike Pence or Ted Cruz takes things in that direction, sometime in the next decade or two)... working with the federal government to churn out that type of movie, geared toward whatever their political agenda might be at the moment.

There used to be a group of people in Ohio called Patriot Pastors, who were very active politically. I'm not sure what happened to them. They might have changed their name, but I bet a lot of the same people are still up to their same old tricks. Sometimes Alex Jones sounds like he is thinking along these lines, too... I saw him compare Hillary Clinton to Linda Blair in The Exorcist at least once, back around October or so, last year.

I still say Cruz looks like a gay Dr. Suess character.

There was a guy on the politics board that was sure Sarah Palin was a sex freak. He used to mention how he would love to have her riding him like hell, a Bible in one hand, a revolver in the other, firing it in the air. emoticon I concur.

I'm sure you've seen the vid of Palin being prayed over by a Christian witch-hunter from Kenya to protect her from demons and evil curses. I'd post it but my data is slowish.

But we've already got religious warriors murdering infidels people, its just the media likes to downplay it, lest they be accused of islamophobia. emoticon

Anyway, The Devil Rides Out (1968) is unabashadly pro christian and our group of protaganists give thanks to God for the victory at the end. I think Duc de Richleau qualifies as a Christian wizard. Its also a really good movie.

My friend's parents were extremely religious evangelicals. Their church made her watch the propoganda movie A Thief in the Night (1973) when she was a little girl. Today she's an atheist, but still has nightmares about waking up alone with everyone else "raptured"emoticon and mayhem ensuing.

One that comes to mind is The Last Exorcism (I can't believe it's nearly 7 years ago now) but this one is very overtly Christian with the charlatan of a preacher suddenly realising that a genuine belief in Jesus will save the day.
