Dec 2017
The first two would be just a week long.

The Week of Love (February 11 to February 17)
Points:
1 Points) Movie with the word โ€œLoveโ€ or other romance related words in title
2 Points) Individual killed while โ€œmaking loveโ€ (not combined with #3 below)
3 Points) Two or more killed at the same time while โ€œmaking loveโ€
4 Points) Each person killed by a loved one (husband/wife, father/daughter,boyfriend/girlfriend. Basically immediate family or dating)

Shark Week (whenever Shark Week is this year)
Points:
1 Points) Movie with the word โ€œSharkโ€ in the title
2 Points) Individual killed by a shark (canโ€™t be an off-screen death, must be seen)
3 Points) A shark dies (again, has to be seen, not implied or off-screen)
4 Points) Two or more sharks die at the same time
5 Points) Two or more people killed by the same shark at the same time

October Challenge additional challenge
Watch at least one movie from each decade from 1920 on

I'm posting these now for input, since Feb is two months away, and if things go as planned with my PCT thru-hike, I won't be around for Shark Week or possibly part of next year's horror challenge.
So... thoughts on the above?

I never thought about week-long challenges. We can always give it a shot. It could go either way, and the shorter duration might help people stay focused, or it might not give people enough time to get into their grooves.

I'm still thinking that every month needs a challenge, and if you want to go there, the mini-challenges could be thrown into the mix too. So, maybe 1 challenge and 1 mini-challenge per month?

As for main challenges, we've got a few that have proven to be legit, and should be annual:

Jan: ???
Feb: Documentary?
Mar: Trash?
Apr: Black and White?
May: ???
Jun: ???
Jul: ???
Aug: ???
Sep: Sci-Fi/Fantasy
Oct: October/Horror
Nov: Turkey
Dec: Xmas

Yeah, the Christmas challenge hasn't happened yet, but I already know it'll be good. It's vague enough that everyone can have something good to find in it. Sci-Fi/Fantasy doesn't have to be in September I don't think, and Black and White doesn't have to be in April.

Of course, I always forget when the Documentary Challenge goes, and the Trash Challenge is still up for debate if it's in March or not, or if we'll adopt the Monster Challenge.

I feel that holidays are always a good basis for some mini-challenges, if anyone decides to go that route. Shark week probably needs to happen, since there are just so damn many shitty shark movies!

The "Love Challenge" could also fit for the month of June if there is enough interest, since June is the favored month to get married.

And yeah, I think "Shark Week" would be a lot of fun (or a lot of pain).

A love-themed challenge would certainly be of interest. I second this suggestion.

How about movies set in the winter, for January, and movies set in the summer, in July? No wait, actually the reverse would be better, because people like to think about the summer when it's cold out, and think about the winter when there's a heat wave.

An animation challenge could be cool.

I watch enough cartoons that I could have some fun with that. Runtime based could work, but I'm not so sure I'd find a lot of animated movies I'd like to watch. Depends on what kind of animation, I supposed. Stop-motion and cartoons would be my thing. I don't care for CGI/game-engine videos.

Animation hasn't really been my thing since I was a kid, but I know there's a lot of badass animated movies out there that I haven't seen and would enjoy. There's of course a fuck ton of Anime out there, and then there's cool 70's shit like the films of Ralph Bakshi. The possibilities are pretty much endless. I figure anything could count except regular movies.

Yeah, or at least movies that consist heavily of animated scenes. And while "Kill Bill" has that whole scene where it's animated to retell what's-her-face killing the crime boss, I don't think that would be enough to count for the challenge (unless they only count those few minutes?), but a tv show like Son of Zorn, in which prominent characters happen to be animated... that ought to count.

Now, we just need a fitting month for it. Or week?

I'd love to watch more Bakshi type stuff. Fritz the Cat is awesome.

Hellsing was pretty decent at times, I always thought. There are a bunch of Hellsing scenes, episodes, etc on Youtube.

Yeah. One scene wouldn't cut it. Maybe it should be the majority, as in over half.

Definitely Month. I have no idea if anyone is planning an extreme challenge next month or not. If not, maybe January. Or I would be happy to discontinue or move the black and white.

I think the Black and White challenge was a good one. There's plenty of material to keep that one going for years to come. April ain't set in stone if anyone's got a better time for it.

An animation challenge sounds like it ought to work. Hope to see some others get behind this idea. I'd hate to do these challenges all by myself... emoticon

I might be a little more enthusiastic about the B&W if we change the rules. I don't know what I was thinking making it to where you can only win if you watch a bunch of 20's movies. That's fuckin' bullshit. Might have to cave in to the runtime system. Seems to work for everyone.

Netflix has an entire Anime section and I'm sure Youtube can provide some cool shit, too, so, material shouldn't be hard to come by at all. should be as successful of a challenge as the current one or the last one.

I rather like the idiosyncracies of the scoring system for the Black and White Challenge! A suggestion if I may; would it perhaps make sense to turn the points system around so that 1920's stuff gets 1 point and 1960's onwards gets 5 points? With black and white being usurped and phased out throughout the 60s, stuff obviously is less plentiful for these more recent decades. Hope the challenge returns in 2018. It's one I've come to love in the last two years!

Someone suggested that a few years ago, but I wasn't all that into changing anything, even if it meant enjoying it more, myself. Both systems make sense in different ways, but a reversal might add more enjoyment, especially for someone trying to rack up points. So, yeah. We'll do that.

I see that I mistakenly ascribed 6 points to the 1960s and on. Corrected that now. It might possibly make sense to bring in a 6 point category for the 1970s and on and award 5 points for films from the 60s. B&W was still common in the 60s but not nearly as much after that.

i do agree - more points for older movies didn't make sense in the B/W context, but i can appreciate how it's difficult to score these challenges, and the B/W is a good one, so mins instead of age makes sense to me

For what it's worth, I'm not really in favour of the minutes idea. I wonder what other prospective participants might favour...

I always figured it was more points for older movies because they're so hard to get through. They get a lot easier to watch as the years go on, so that was my guess. Runtime is a good default point system for most challenges, but I do like how some challenges score it differently. It's always a little different that way.

Yeah. What Box_A_Hair said. Originally, I thought it would be a good idea to have 20's movies be worth the most points cuz they are harder to sit through (in my opinion). Guess I was looking at it from a Turkey perspective. However, I would be willing to watch bad movies to win a challenge. I can't say the same for silent films. emoticon
