OK, I'm not a complete moron (a half moron, yes) so I gather most folks don't like that the scales tip more toward comedy this time around, and that, after the absolute classic the first is, that chances are a sequel was just gonna pale in comparison.

But hear me out (read me out)

I've made it very clear (annoyingly so, I'm sure) that I'm a ROTLD fanatic. I think about that movie or some facet of that movie at least once a week. However, ROTLD 2 means nearly as much to me, but perhaps more for nostalgic reasons than anything. It was the first horror movie I ever saw in the theater. It scared the everliving piss outta me. I didn't see the original until a few years after that, but the way I see it, part 2 has always been a great companion piece to the first. Ok, I realize I could come off as being bias.

I watched it a few nights ago so that's why I'm writing this. I still love the movie. It has a lot to like in it and when I see people bashing it it does leave me scratching my head.

For starters, I think the movie is actually a bit creepier than its rep suggests. Yeah, there are some pretty hokey comedy bits thrown in, but when the film does want to scare you, I think it does an admirable job. Tarman 2.0 surprisingly outdoes the original Tarman, lookin' like an animated glob of molasses from hell. Another part that kinda sends a chill down your spine (if you allow it to) is when a zombie tries to trick our cast of characters into "coming to the hospital" but is outed upon answering Harry Truman after being asked who is the current US president.

Special fx, blood, zombie make-up and pus are better than ever, and perhaps in some ways even ickier and more elaborate than the original. But of course, that doesn't necessarily make the movie. It's just icing on the cake. Musical score? If we're talking the original score and not....whatever the shit we hear on the WB DVD is...is memorable, distinct, lively and with loads of personality. This is no dull score. Music can make or break a movie, in my opinion.

The pacing is nuts. Seriously, it's some of the zaniest, wildest, most delerious pacing in any movie ever. Broad claim, but I think it's true. This bad boy starts with a bang almost immediately and never lets up. The scene where our cast of heroes all first meet up at Jesse's house, deal with the decapitated zombie head ("get that damn screwdriver, OUT of mah head!"), go to Doc Mandel's house (best character in the movie) to get his car and play hot potato with a zombie's severed hand is exactly what I'm talking about: it's so over the top and fun, it tickles my movie-loving pickle in all the right places.

I'm not expecting to change anyone's opinion, just voicing my own and some of the reasons why I think this sequel is rather underrated. It isn't bad. It just isn't the original. The re-casting of Thom Matthews and James Karen in different roles was always a neat touch, despite the fact that Mr. Karen was given better lines (and probably better direction) as Burt in the original. Linnea Quigley (and her, um, quiggleys) are sorely missing, but we have one of my favorite ultimate 80s chicks Suzanne Snyder instead playing the bitchy hair metal girlfriend lookin' like she'd rather be on the set of the new Whitesnake video. The music is pretty good too, with some Robert Palmer tunes, a great opening song by Julian Cope that really sets the tone, and a cool party remix of Monster Mash to close out the film. Anthrax even sneaks in, though you'd have to have a good ear to catch their ode to Cliff Burton being snuck in.

All in all, love, love, love it.

Ick. I love horror comedies, but the comedy in this movie is horrible. It's way too corny. All the jokes seem to be written with 5 year olds in mind.

It's certainly a witless, innocent form of comedy (the 80s were pre-cynicissm) but Doc Mandel really has some great lines, and his delivery is ace. He also played Jerry's dad early on in Seinfeld.

Well to be honest Welcome to the Jungle sounded more like you were going to get some silly george of the Jungle esqe movie but whoever thought up such a boring story or way of filming I think even 5 year olds would make a more entertaining movie emoticon

To be fair, you hate almost every movie you see, so your opinion hardly counts for anything. Also, you act as if I'm a big fan of that movie, which I am not. It's in the top half of my ordered list of cannibal films, but you must take into account that I do not like cannibal films.

Well I think for someone not liking cannibal movies you have seen quite some of them it's not there that many of these.

Yeah, there's a lot of pain involved in my neverending quest to see every horror movie ever made.

Yesterday I got to hear I watched too much horror and should watch other genres. Today I hate almost every movie. Sure if I really hate them why do I watch them so much, organise challenges and have a few dozens of them on disc. Also would a movie hater write 7 pages of a tribute to Herschell Gordon Lewis.

You sound so serious, Johan, lol. Relax!

In all fairness, Johan, you don't like the majority of what you watch. I am not being disingenuous when I say that. I think I have known you for several years now and in that time I must have recommended you several dozen movies and I don't remember you liking one, lol.

Well sorry if I reacted grumphy felt a bit like ganging up on me here. Yeah I do watch a lot and it's true I'm quite demanding and not easily pleased when it comes down to movies. Maybe it's because we have quite different tastes that your recs were not to my liking. I did a few recs to you too that you didn't like, Celia for example which was actually not much of a horror movie.

But I don't mind watching many movies and most of them not being great I love finding one gem even if I have to go through lotsa bad or just ok movies for me it's worth it. If that's weird for someone else well not so weird as Znep paining himself watching cannibal movies a genre that isn't to his taste.

There is lots of movies I could praise but most of those are probably not in your interest so I guess you don't take note and mostly see when I don't like it.
I have been putting much effort in writing the part of HGL. I have been doing some other writings before about early movies that were shocking, early exploitation movies. I love to analyze and compare and if I feel like it write down my thoughts.

At the end of the trash challenge I could probably write a piece on cannibal movies as I have seen a lot more of these now. But that's probably not in your interest.
Often when I do watch a movie I am often wondering when I think the concept was good but the execution not so much (to my liking) putting myself in the directing/writing seat and pondering how I would have done it.

Me being a very critical movie viewer sure but I'm pretty critical for myself too and if I write I take the feedback I get serious and want to improve. I have written dozens of stories in the past and there is many I tore apart too not being satisfied.
A a software tester for about 10 years I need to be critical, the perfect tool doesn't exist same with story or movie it can always improve.

I know you love paranormal a lot. While I do think it's certainly intriguing there is a tendency of slow pacing, relying too much on atmosphere and/or vague storylines. Sure that's hard for me to get through such movies but I'm not really one for giving up and might find a few things I do like who knows if my desire to write some stories again will come and I might use that 1 idea or concept I liked even if most of the movie is not to my taste.
So even though if Znep said well ok you dislike most what you watch so your opinion is not valid was not meant to be serious it felt tempting to put his nose on the tribute on HGL I wrote which he did not read at all.

You can do a paranormal challenge and I would participate sure and I would watch the recs you would give me and tell you what I do like but also what I don't like. And yeah I would not fall asleep even when it's tempting emoticon

I have organised last year a movie challenge on moviemeter where all movie genres were given a chance ideal to compare and well probably not so strange that at the end I was like ok it was nice to have some variation but glad I could lose myself mostly in the horror genre again. I participated in the ape challenge last year here and some (even non-horrors) were good. Challenges for me are a good way to get out of that comfort zone or maybe discover things I thought I didn't like. Thanks to the black and white challenge I found out I actually do love silents and that I have a soft spot for these old scifi horrors even if they are so cheesy at times.

Besides this is Trash Epics what kind of stuff would you expect to be talked here, high brow psychological movies for the highly inteliigent brains ? emoticon

You can rate films on there. You can keep a diary of what and when you seen something. You can follow other users. In many ways it is better than IMDb.

I still am a software tester, it's my official job even though there is other IT and administrative tasks I execute.

But the testing means a company/firm/institution writes some software. Usually there is some kind of description/functional analysis of what the programm is supposed to do and I test it accordingly. If the software is doing something what it isn't supposed to do that is a bug and I report that to the developer(s). It's mostly black box testing so I don't know about the code behind it. However I did learn basic HTML code so if it is a website to test it's white box since I understand most of the code behind it. However I don't fix things that's the developer's task. When things are fixed I retest and if needed regression tests.

Well I only saw the original which I think is fun. Horror comedy isn't really my thing with some exceptions obviously ROTLD and Braindead (Dead Alive), Frankenhooker is a fun one too and even though not belly laugh humor I guess Re-Animator could be seen as comedy too. Frignt Night has some funny moments too because of Evil Ed but I find that character more annoying than funny.

Many people seem to prefer Evil Dead II over the original, well I'm not fan of either of the 2. They are not scary (well not a good benchmark since no horror really scares me any more) nor funny to me. Besides the sequel was actually the same story with different characters. I guess I just don't like the Ash character and the pure randomness of it all because I thought the remake executed the whole thing like I wanted it with a nice female protagonist.

I think Hellraiser II is a tad better than the original. Blood Feast 2 I think is light years better than the original. The Conjuring 2 is also a million zillion better than the original.
House of 1000 corpses was crap, the Devil's Rejects much better but still rather average. I don't think Zombie makes a good director.
I also prefer Poltergeist 2 over the original but in the end I find both not so special any more.
Somehow I do prefer Nightmare on Elm Street 3 over the original, with 2 I only bothered once didn't like it

This is very much ROTLD Lite. And the most obvious case worthy of that label that I can think of. The comedy does seem to outweigh the Horror, and I believe I remember hearing that the director wasn't really a Horror fan at all, so, that shows, and the whole movie seems to lean a little more towards the Nickelodeon side of things. When thnking of it as the sequel to ROTLD, I really dislike it. But I could totally watch it any time and not be bored. I think 3 is a better movie but I guess I find 2 more enjoyable. If I had to pick which one to watch right now, I'd go with 2. Also doesn't seem so bad since 4 and 5 came out.
