Say if someone asks you your favorite film of the [random franchise] series. The first film is usually always the best. Even if you enjoy the sequels, they still owe too much to the original entry. Obviously, they wouldn't exist without the original, but the story of the sequels tends to always be very derivative of the original.

Do you concur with this, or can you think of examples to contradict it?

For example, I'm here thinking which Planet of the Apes is my favorite. Sure, I voted the first one the highest, but that's just respecting of its impact on film in general. I might very well prefer one of the sequels, but damnit... I'm just not sure.

I've never heard anyone say they liked Prom Night better than Prom Night II.

Here's a first for you. I do!

Barely, though. Mostly cuz Jamie Lee Curtis and Leslie Nielson, plus that music. "Prom night! Everything is alright!"

Part 2 has a lot of good things going for it, like Michael Ironside, the vibe of 1987, and some Freddy Krueger-type imagination. The first still stuck with me more though. emoticon

I think the original is a more respectable movie, but part II seems to be the more popular, and I personally find it more entertaining. 3 is pretty good, too, despite sucking at being a Prom Night 2 part 2. I could use a rewatch of the original. Pretty sure it's been decades.

Empire Strikes Back is a lot of people's favorite Star Wars - myself included. And I'm in the minority on this but I actually prefer Temple of Doom to Raiders. But, hands down, the winner is Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan - still the greatest Trek ever.

While I agree that most sequels are derivative of the original, I can think of several sequels I'd name my favorite over the original.

Here's one I think you might agree with: Blood Feast 2.

*Almost* always the first film of a franchise will be superior and most of the times the sole reason that the first installment will spawn sequels is because it had a generally positive reception and generated significant profit so the producers will attempt to capitalize that success which leads to inferior sequels as cash grab.

I prefer Dawn Of The Dead over Night. Amityville 2 over the first.

I know some people like Evil Dead 2 more than the original, same as Phantasm II.

Always keep in mind Friday The 13th Part 2 is the movie where Jason became the killer.

With Part 3 being the movie where the hockey mask was introduced.

I don't even like the original that much compared to the sequels.

Good points. I'm surprised I didn't think of these since I've always felt the same way.

Um, it's common knowledge Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation is better than TCM '74.

I much prefer Children of the Corn 2 and 3 to the original, which I don't think very much of at all. Like, neat location and I like Linda Hamilton generally and that's about all. 2 and 3 are derivative in that they follow the kids in deadly service to a dark god theme, but other than that, they ditch the failed suspenseful and serious leanings for straightforward creative schlock. And the original wasn't terribly influential on the horror genre in general, the sequels just seemed to stick.
